Well my friend just bought a black 95 gs from a guy for 2000 claiming it needed its timming belt replaced. But when he took it to the shop the mechanic said that it was like grinding a valve around inside?(Sorry my friend isnt really into cars so he wasnt really paying attention to what the mechanic said.) But anyways I guess theres metal shavings in the oil and I only looked at it for like two minutes and its knocking pretty loud. I thought it sounded like spun bearing? Can someone tell me what causes this and what I would have to do to fix it? Is the engine a lost cause? If it was something to do with the valves does anyone know what it could be?

The main thing I am curious about is that it passed smog yesterday fine. That must mean that the compression is pretty good right? And I thought that a spun bearing would also result in a loss of power? Well he has pretty much given up on the car after three days of owning it so Im thinking of offering him either 1100 or 1200 for the car, but would that even really be worth it? I wouldnt mind putting a little money into it but I would want to save the money for something like an engine rebuild for my main dsm. Thanks- :rocks:

If the oil has shavings in it the motor is usually no good. Pull the oil pan off and pull apart the main and connecting rod caps. Check to see if the bearings are scored up. If they are its time for a rebuild. This happened to me when I spun a balance shaft bearing.

My guess would be no, your buddy should of got the car inspected by a mechanic before he purchased the car.

The only way the guy would have given him his money back is if the car failed to pass smog, since its illeagle to sell without having it pass. But since it did my friends stuck with it. :notgood: Its too bad, Ive always wanted a 2g but for it not being a turbo and needing a new engine its just not worth it for me. Thanks a lot anyways for the help, maybe if he goes down to like 800 Ill pick it up...So now my friend is scarred for life with buying from an owner and is probably going to buy a 98 civ hatchback, no ac, pw, or pl at a dealership for 6500. ROFL

You went to the wrong place to get it smogged. When I was in Cali, a car could not pass smog if it was knocking. I would take it to another place to get smogged and watch it fail, then you'll have a court case in which you might be able to win. Did your friend originally take it to get smogged or did the seller?
