Well some of you might have read about my ordeal, For those of who have not here is the short version...

Long story short, My oil cooler seal blew out on my car and it ran 95% of the oil out of the engine. I was running the car hard in 4th gear about 6500 rpm, I shut it down as soon as i saw the smoke pouring out of the car.

I had to drive the car onto the trailer and put oil in it to get it on there but it blew it out all over. I thought the oil cooler was just loose and tightened it up put oil back in the car and started it.

The oil pressure looked good and the motor did not seem to knock or make any noise. I drained the oil out of the motor today to put the new seal in and noticed what looked like really really fine metalic dust in the oil.:sosad:

So should i start ordering bearings or just fix the seal put oil in it and see what happens?

well if you started it and it didnt knock or make any other odd out of the ordinary noise then i would just fix the seal and put fresh oil in it mybe run it for like 500 miles then change it again and keep a eye on it.

It's a judgement call.Either the engine is trashed or it isn't.If you want to be sure take the pan off and pull a cap on the mains and rods.If it checks out fine the job cost you a pan gasket if not you could have a rebuildable engine or just turn the key and hope for the better.

If its just fine dust i wouldn't worry about it. Use a paint filter on your next oil change to inspect what comes out. I had a low oil pressure situation on a road race built CRX and did 15 min of a road race at low oil pressure in left handers. We drained oil, saw metallic dust, pulled pan, looked at rods/main bearings saw some scratching but nothing really bad. Ran great for another 3 events till the end of the season. We're rebuilding it now for other reasons.

Thanks for all the replys, Im paranoid like any one would be. esp since i just put a bunch of money into the car and painted it. I think i will just fix the seal and hope for the best.

Dang..metal in the oil isn't good (sorry on this). Something didn't like something too well when they made contact, esp when you being in 4th gear at that high of RPM's.

Might have cylinder wall scarring from the rings shaving the walls on the cylinders- where the metal dust is showing up in the oil ...

Dang, sorry on this, but good luck - DSM
