So let me get this straight: Your dad is convinced turbos are terrible and unreliable, so he's going to buy you an older, less reliable, more expensive turbo car? I almost feel sorry for you...

:thumbdown. you pops must not know jack. j/p my pops encourages me to do shit on my own and not pay a shop unless i need machining. maintenence should be done by yourself and friends. I thought dsm's make mechanics out of us!?

Ok, Im not laughing at the fact your car needs all those repairs, because I know that sucks and I can relate. I just don't understand the reasoning behind this

Agreed, that just doesn't make sence.....Tell your dad it's your car, and you will fix it yourself. Educate him on turbo's. And also educate him on the fact that non DSM people don't under stand our ways and wants, we are a special breed.

It's your car, the best thing is dig in and do the work yourself, mechanic should be a last resort always....

oh i dunno i love my dsm's but i think i'd trade both for a porche cause i could sell it and build an even better DSM!!!!! btw a porshe will get more chicks than a dsm especially a 1g unless u go all out ricer and body kit and paint etc..
just my opinion but hell you love the car fight for it :)

Dude Tell your pops not to worry If it brakes hes not the one who will be fixing it. Thats what i did now i don't hear a single work from my parents and when i work on the car the like "you need help w/anything" But i wouldn't take advice from some guy that fixes different cars and only gets a DSM once a year to fix. Srew him. Its not what ur pops wants it what u want. besides your the one who will be driving it

uhh... sell it and get a 951... i mean seriously... are any of you really trying to say that if his dad is willing to help him buy it... he shouldn't get it? and any of you that jump in and are like "DSM FOR LIFE" yeah.. they're fun cars... but you REALLY should drive a 951 before you even try to compare them

i am going to school to be a mechanic and i wouldn't let any of the other kids work on my car....

i would take the porsche over a 1g i don't know if i could sacrifice my 2g unless it was a new 911, i wound't even think twice if it was a gt3 :D

944 turbo's are quick lil cars.. they are nice and the later 80's ones are very nice.. the flip side is this.. they are a total PITA to work on. parts are soo freakin expensive. i have 2 dsm's, a 90 928 and a 84 944. ive raced them all at the track and in a 1/4 a dsm will have to take it but once a turn is commin up the porsche will dominate.

either way have fun and do what you want.

Hey there,

I have a black/tan 87 951..and lemme tell you..that car is RELIABLE. It has 196K on it, just replace the timing belt and waterpump every 40K and the car is ####ing RELIABLE.

Fast as hell, handles better then ANY car I've ever driven, and a whole lot more fun and more SPORTS car

go for it
mike

Man . man .man

those cars are 13.9-14.5 depending on the reviewer, right?

I missed out on a 93GTS for 4.5K!!! SNAPPED ITS FREAKIN TIMING BELT. The guy bought it and I told him to do the belts before he moves it once inch. He drives around for 3 days..snaps the belt. TRASHES both heads, bends all 32 valves. Man, what an expensive mess....

I love my 951 though :) Easily one of the most gorgeous cars porsche ever produced. Next on my list after I pay for my DSM is 968 mirrors and door handles...then an AIR splitter...hmm.mm

now i have to disagree.. i think the 928 is the nicest but im mildly bios. that sucks about the tbelt i check my tension relegiously. isnt it something like 100 dollars a valve or something? in a couple years im going to look at doing devek stroker and seeing if i can push 500hp. my uncle is tuneing his and first run on the dyno on the new stroker he had soo much tq it took out the first couple gears in the tranny so were working on a corvette 6spd swap into the 928 now..

porsche's r soo much fun.

I have a hard time calling the 951 gorgeous... but a fine car none the less... my friend owns two. boosting his daily driver up to 18 psi right now... too bad hes been rebuilding both cars for over a year now LOL he crashed one, insurance totaled it, and he bought it back (he was going to let the insurance pay him 6500 for a car he paid 10K for 3 months earlier good thing i talked some sense into his head) and then bought two more parts cars, taking a good engine from one that was rolled, and putting it in one that the PO spun a bearing on at the track with 10K miles on it.. LOL, the previous owner of the car had WAY more money than common sense.

If you have the chance to get a 951 over any dsm... DO IT... yeah parts are more expensive, but the break WAY less often. porsches are expensive for a reason... remember that

Ah, when I get home, I'll post some pics of my 951..hopefully it will change your mind :)

jott5555: 928 valves are about 110$ exhaust/each and 130$ intake when I checked
..so about 3080 for the valves alone then find a head...oh my god..

Once winters over Ill sell my DSM, my current 951 and buy a cheaper 951 (my current one is ...nice for me to drive it/track it/ etc...might as well sell it and get a cheaper guards red 86 (dime a dozen!) LOL

Most porsches have serious reliability issues, much like older VWs (go figure).

They are expensive because of their name, and the fact that people will pay such prices for them.

Uh..not to be a dick...

but what reliabilty problems do they have?

Coming from a family of porsches of every kind (914s, 924s, 944s, 911s - from 66 to 97- ) there were never any serious reliabilty problems. Hell, a friend of mine has 355K on a 944T (951) Engine has never been opened. Still does 163mph.

Only serious problems come from lack of matience, just ilke ANY other car.

They are expensive because they are actually well engineered sports cars. All parts are designed with two purposes in mind. Performance and strength. DRIVE A PORSCHE... you'll understand then. its not just a name... theres a reason they got that name. you take a porsche to the track (as in road course... ) every weekend for a year, see how many parts you break.. take a dsm, or an evo, or almost any cheaper performance car, you WILL break more crap. seriously.. find some 951 thats been well maintained that you can take for a fun test drive... there IS a difference

bling bling.. my 928 is the only car ive ever driven that i know i cannot push to its limits. ive taken that car on roller coaster rides, made people puke, shit ive come close to pukeing myself a few times..]
