Mechanic Shop Problem

Ok, im having a problem right now with a mechanic shop. This is my second time going there, the first time i got gauges and new belts etc installed.Now.. this week my brakes went in the front.. my caliper frooze up and wouldnt release and it just killed my rotors.

I called the guy up and he priced me $220 to fix it.So i took it to him and dropped it off yesterday. While i was in school, he left me a voicemail saying he wanted to talk to me about my brake system so call him back ( this was around 10am). I called him back at 12,and hes like your car is done.. it comes to 532 bucks. I told him over the phone before i dropped it off, its a front brake problem, the left front seems to be sticking..he told me rotors were 50 each.. and when i called today, he told me all ## rotors came to 180 which means he had to of put 4 on. I didnt tell him to do the back

My question is..should i pay the 532 bucks when he told me it would come to 220ish, and than he goes and does the work without telling me i needed new calipers,rotors,pads etc?

Did you get a quote to do the work? If not, its hard to get out of it. You only asked for the front though, so i would say listen, i asked for ONLY the front, thats all i will pay for. Either take the rears off, or i will not pay. Either or. Do not budge.

I called the guy up, and he told me about 220, thats how i got the quote.

Pay for the services you requested. Make sure he makes adjustments for the labor too. It's not your fault they went beyond the work you requested them to do.

Im not for sure if he did the back or not.. but 532 doesnt seem right for just the front

ask where he got the parts from, and call up and ask for a price on rotors....see if he was lying or not.

Thats 100 in rotos, 60 in pads, and he said i needed calipers..
How is this 532 bucks

Very rarely do you need calipers for the car. I went to a monroe or whatever a few years back when i couldn't do much, and they said the same thing. I had my father look at it, they were dirty, but fine. I wouldnt pay for that shitte.

I don't know about New Jersy but in Wisconsin we are not allowed to due repairs without the customers ok. If you ok me 220.00 thats what i have to work with. If it is more than 10% higher than that I can not go forward without your ok. If I did the work without your ok I would have to take a loss on the rest

exactly what im thinking
he told me 220, and it ends up being 532.
For just front brake pads,rotors,and calipers
Rotors he told me 50 each, pads 30 ea, and calipers he didnt say but there like 40 each i think.. thats like 220 in parts, are u telling me theres 200+ in labor?

Not quite true... In his case the brakes were sticking. That means its most likely one of three things. A collapsed or clogged brake hose, stuck slide pins OR a bad caliper. Now if it’s the latter two, they will most likely need replacing. (Unless you get lucky with a slide pin) I see this more often than you expect at my job. (I work at a shop)

As far as you’re problem, I would get a price list and see why he charged you that much. Go to another shop and get a quote for the same repairs you wanted. There price should be really close to your original quote. Use this against you’re shop. Argue it; tell him you won’t pay that much etc... BUT the sad part is he has your car. AND he will continue to have it until this is resolved.

This is why you should always get a written quote.

Did he quote you just parts or did he quote you parts and labor? or are you unsure?

Calipers I am going to guess run ~$70

So 70 + 100 + 60 = $230

And that is with no labor. Add 2.5 hours of labor

And your up to the mid 400's. not exactly 532, but you get the drift. Get an itemization.

this is the exact reason why i dont take my car to a garage. half the time they rip you off. dont do the work right an even some times they rig something to break so you come back to them again.

you are in a bad situation. You can take him to small claims court, but you will not get your vehicle until the matter is resolved or you could pay and get a receipt and then take him to court to try and get the difference. Good luck.

Have him itemize the cost of EVERYTHING, he may have quoted you just in parts and you didn't think about the labor which adds up pretty quick.

ya i paid $312 i believe after taxes for new rotors, calipers and brake pads. got only my front ones done.

wow man, he definately pulled a fast one on you, you definately got ripped off to no end. I'd be funkin rich if I charged people that much for doing that little bit of work. (and yes it takes next to no time, maybe a half hour to change rotors, calipers, and pads on both front wheels.) i would definately be getting some money back man, but i guess it's your call. good luck with it anyway.

I think that price of $350 is a very fair price for his work. Actually, I think it is a little low... so Good Work on getting his price down.
