ive got a 92 n/t and im lookin into buying a 93 tsi awd and wondering how hard it would be to just convert my n/t into awd, what parts would i need to change or custimize for this to work properlly? the 93 tsi doesnt have the egine, trans, or somputter, so i know i could just put my n/t egine in the and find a awd trans and itd be alot easier, but i kinda want to make it a thing you dont really see, if you know ### i mean, any help would be great guys, Thanks

Firstly you need an awd transmission that has the output shaft to run the transfer case with. A fwd transmission will not work.

Does the awd car have the front axles? They are also different on an awd. They are equal length with the driver side using an intermediate shaft running over the top of the transfer case and bolting to the block through a carrier bearing.

What engine is your n/t? I don't have allot of experience with the 420 engine but I don't think it will mate to a 4g63 transmission, I could be wrong on that. You will need a 4g63 with an awd transmission.

Also what fun is having awd without a turbo man? Your best bet would be to sell your n/t engine and source a turbo 4g63 and awd transmission and transfer case.

Edit: Sorry I didn't realize you were asking about a true fwd to awd conversion. This has been covered and I am guessing this why your thread got tossed.

The part where you said "I know I could just put my n/t engine in and find an awd trans" threw me off I guess. I don't know how I missed the second half of that sentence, I was pretty tired the other day I guess. I thought you were just asking about doing that, and that is what I was trying to explain. But as you said you would also get an awd trans so most of what I explained you seem to already understand.

Like I said I don't know a whole lot about 420 engines, I didn't realize they were only available in 2g cars, that is why I asked what your engine was.

Sorry for misunderstanding your question and not knowing much about n/t 1g engines.

But what you are actually asking about requires allot of fabrication and skills and knowledge to acomplish. It is much more practical to start with an awd chassis and there are lots of other things you can experiment with if you just want to be different than such a large project as that when you could have the same result simply by using the awd chassis you've got (or are going to get).

Don't be offended by people saying the project might be over your head. It is simply because most people with the knowledge and skill to actually pull this off would probably not have to ask on here about it is all.

You cant, unless you replace the rear floor pan, gas tank and a slew of other things.

1G NT's were a 4G63....

Am I just completly misinformed because as far as i know 420a never came in a 1g

Try searching, this topic has been covered many times, there's lots of useful information you can use in some of the old threads. Try the VFAQ.com also, it's covered there too. This project might be a little over your head (no offense) it's not something that can be done quick and easy, especially if you wanna do it the RIGHT WAY.

First off do you have another car you can drive while your working on the swap? Your gonna need to pull out your engine, tranny, wire harness (the fun part), gauge cluster, ecu & fuel pump. You'll need to acquire a 4g63 turbo motor with a awd tranny, intercooler, turbo fuel pump, turbo gauge cluster, turbo wire harness, tubo ecu and transfer case (since you wanna go awd, making the project considerably harder).

Let us know if you actually decide to go through with this, and if you do there's lots of members here that will help ya through it :thumb:
