Lowered My Car Today But Didn't Mean To....Blown Balljoint...Pics Galore!!!

So today I fell victim to the infamous lower control arm ball joint failure. I've been meaning to change them myself ever since I found out from Mitsu that the recall replacement was done back in 01 and noticed the infamous "creaking" sound. Well, thank god I was only going 10 mph after making a right turn. I hit a small bump and all hell broke loose and you can see in the first pic how far I got after it broke looking at the tire marks. The ball joint completely separated from the control arm and in the process it ripped out the cv axle. Had to wait an hour and a half for the tow truck guy after it took 30 mins to find a guy that knew how to get the car on the flatbed. Let's just say that he was experienced when it came to this and with 2G's especially...

I feel your pain man, this happened to me with my last talon about a week after I got it. I was going about 5mph when it happened though.

At least it made me put a move on getting rid of the fiberglass fenders and gaudy body kit bumper that was on it.

Ebay has GREAT deals on these control arms btw, advance/autozone where ever has them for like 120-150 I think it was. On ebay you can get all 4 for about that much. I redid all mine after the first one broke, its no fun having that shit happen.

I think they will but not if its been done before, and they get pretty cheesy about the circumstances in which they WILL replace it. I just saved myself the wasted time and effort of dealing with satan and bought the stuff and did it myself, it was my DD I didnt want to wait a week to find out whether or not they'd replace it.

But on a serious note thank god you were going slow. I have always worried about something like that happening to me. My lower ball joint was making noise because I had a tear in the boot and stuff got in there. I pumped a bunch of grease in it and am hoping it holds. The ball joint didn't seem loose so I think it is ok. How much damage are you looking at?

How much damage are you looking at?

Your caption reminds me of one they did for a Brazilian dsmer who had the same problem but his actually looked worse than mine.

I'm gonna be replacing both of the lower control arms w/ new ball joints and the PS CV axle. Should be able to do this in a couple hours if the axle isn't a bi*** to get out. Also my fender cap will need to be repainted.

Funny motherf.....er aren't you? John was on his way home from work so I called his ass since I was over in his side of town.

A couple weeks ago I stopped by Satan and had them check my VIN to see if the recall was done and they had record of it being done is 2001. I'm wondering if there's something they can do especially since it was their part that failed. They might try to give me the out of warranty speech especially since it's been seven years and these parts go bad over time. I'm calling them tomorrow to see what they have to say because the last time I went there the service guys were pretty cool; if not I'll just do the job myself or wait till you get back so you can give me a hand.
