Hey guys. Getting a low-pitched whine/growl in gears 3rd, 4th and 5th...gets louder with increased speed and has gotten worse over a two week period. Hardly noticed it at first, then got considerably louder to the point I'm not even driving it anymore.

It goes away when I push in the clutch or just coasting in neutral. No problems with the clutch, getting into or out of gears. The car has no vibration through the wheel. Hard to determine where the sound is localized, but I'm thinking somewhere passenger side mid/front. Hard to pinpoint since I have a built motor and no balance shafts.

New clutch, TOB...hell just about everything is new. Just had a shop replace the passenger side axle about a month before this started as well. Checked it out and there's LOTS of axle grease that's been flung around the underside of the vehicle. It's a new axle so no ripped boots or anything.

All fluids replaced a couple of months ago when I installed the built motor.

Any quick checks? I'm thinking it's not the tranny since there's no gear/clutch issues. Possible t-case? Something to do with that new axle install perhaps?

Would love to get it on the road again...thanks in advance guys!

May be a CV shaft on its way out?

It sounds like a shaft/wheel bearing issue, but then you said It goes away with the clutch in.

Go back under the car and make sure the axle is all the way in the hub, and t-case.

New clutch, TOB...Was this OEM TOB though?hell just about everything is new. Just had a shop replace the passenger side axle about a month before this started as wellMaybe the axle shaft end isn't seated all the way into the transmission. Checked it out and there's LOTS of axle grease that's been flung around the underside of the vehicle. Just a thought mine whines when the ac is on. It stops when the clutch is in or in neutral. But when I am driving it whines. At first it made me extremely nervous but now i know that what it is from.

Let us know what it is.

Possibly bearings in the tranny going bad. My last one whined just like you describe. It was getting louder over time so I put a Shep trans in.

Even with the noise it still shifted and drove perfectly, I would imagine that it would continue to drive fine until something major happened as a result of the deteriorating bearings.

Forgot to mention that the whining transmission had done this before due to bad bearings, so I know it was the bearings. Don't know why it kept eating them though. It's just been sitting in the garage since I put the new tranny in.

Transfer Case!, Mine started off with a small whine, very light. I thought it was the new fuel pump i had just put in.

The sound just kept progressing over time to the point it felt as if i was riding in a City bus.

Check your fluid levels.

sounds like a bad clearance problem with the gears in your trans. you might be able to get away with running a thicker gear oil with some lucas, but you're most likely going to have to open 'er up

Yes, OEM TOB.

It's a brand new axle...my last axle cv joints were going bad due to a ripped boot. I couldn't get the castle nut off so had to have a shop replace it (the axle) for me, which I hate.

Not noticing any leaks on the ground or around the t-case and the fluids were all replaced/filled about 2000 miles ago. I'll have to get under there and double check though.

I'm hoping it's not the tranny, but after reading a few other issues here I was second guessing, thinking maybe it's not as bad.

Also, if the axle weren't all the way in the hub, wouldn't I be seeing tranny fluid leaking out? At this point it's been sitting in the garage for a few months and I'm not seeing any leaks.

Little update.

Checked that axle. It appears to be all good. No idea where all this grease is coming from though...believe it or not that boot is NOT torn or loose.

Drained the tranny and transfer case...The fluid coming out of the xfer case was like liquid metal. Very silver...my hands look like I got into some fairy dust. Tranny fluid came out nice and clean. Seems that's the culprit? I thought these xfer cases were fairly durable unless you launched on them all the time? I've never launched this car (yet) as I want to upgrade the tranny first.

Worth it to rebuild or just try to find another??
