Ok ill start with the basics, 1997 gsx, im running a brand new (2,000 miles) ebay 16g on 27 psi.
well i was running this set up for awhile (2,000 miles) on a stock head gasket and stock head bolts (yes i know) and the head finally lifted and i blew the head gasket. Right before this, whenever the car would hit/see boost, it felt like it was "dragging" or the brakes were being applied until about 6 psi, then it would boost normally, and i also heard a faint whine at boost. Head gasket blew, i replaced the head gasket and put some ARP head studs in. Now the car is doing the same thing but the whine has gotten extremely loud (sounds like a god dam whipple twin screw supercharger). It still feels like it drags when it first hits boost (from 0-5 psi) then after that, it runs like a raped ape.

My friend says its the clutch on its way out, i doubt it. i am running a brand new stock clutch. It started to slip slightly (only when ive been riding it and it gets hot) but the sound is boost related, not rpm related. For example, in 2nd gear, i get the car up to 15 psi and let off the gas, gauge goes to vacuum and car sounds normal, get back into boost and the whine comes back.

Im kind of wondering if the blown head gasket messed up my turbo (water/oil mix)
or if its just because my friend decided it would be a good idea to adjust my internal wastegate so my EBAY 16g boosted to 27 psi.. i knew it wasnt a good idea and ive told him continually that we need to turn it down, TOO LATE?

Thanks for all the help in advance, hope i can get this figured out soon.

Have you checked the shaft for play on the turbo? Considering it is an ebay brand it's highly likely it is failing. You will hear nothing but bad things from ebay turbos on here, and many many many other forums because the quality of them is well, crap.

k well 1st of all 27 psi on a s16g turbo is just asking for blow seals. that loud whine noise with the hesitation is mostlikely caused from a boost leak near the j-pipe had the same thing happen to me turned out my j-pipe gasket was blown. that ebay turbo will let go on you so hope they gave a warrenty on it if not hope you got some money aside to buy a reliable turbo. do a BLT and report back with results.

Thanks for the replies guys,

First off, i had a blown j-pipe gasket right after the build so i replaced that, the right bolt hole (into turbo) felt a little stripped though, ill be sure to try and fix that tomorrow.. if noise continues, i wanna throw a 20g on.

I got this turbo for free, and frankly 27 psi on a 16g in my opinion, is KICK ASS :hellyeah: but in all honesty, we wanted to test it.

My guess is your timing belt is too tight. Which will cause a supercharger like whine.

As stated above... BLT first and then let us know... I get the whine every now and again on my 16g but im at 14psi and min is due to the GReddy BOV spring is the wrong one (big one instead of little one) so as I boost is whistles loud and when I let off it stops. Turn that boost down to 12-15 till you get this figured out. I've been running my turbo (ebay 16g) for months now on 14 and 0 problems and 0 shaft play. It's a hit or miss on those turbo's but 90% is a BIG miss

I can almost guarantee the turbo is about to take a shit. That "whine" you hear during boost is most likely the compressor wheel making contact with the compressor cover something like this..

Check shaft play.. In and out, and side to side.. And also, these guys are saying 27psi on a EBAY 16g is crazy because they're ####ing junk!
