So, I've been having this problem for a while now and just got tired of it. I replaced all bushings and greased in the shifter knob base and it eliminated all the loose play while in gear but it always is super loose in neutral while wiggle side to side and up and down a lot and then feels like it his hitting against something at certain areas when wiggling side to side.
Could this be that my transmissions starting to go out??
Also here's a video.

Are your shift cable casings bolted down (not moving) in the engine compartment?
Also is the select lever shoe worn down on the tranny select lever (I'm assuming the 420a has it like the 4g63 does)?

This is how it looks under the hood with all that up and down play. It’s like the neutral won’t go back to the actual center and move a lot up and down in neutral.

Are the shifter cable CASINGS between the firewall and the tranny shift levers moving back and forth in any direction (example: the entire casing is moving perpendicular to the inside moving cable) while you're shifting because the casing is not bolted down?

{BTW I've never seen the 420A tranny but from your video it looks like the 420A doesn't have a select lever shoe like the 4g63 has.}

took the center console apart. So are these bad shifter cables with this up and down play? Which are the casings?

The shifter cable casings are the part the moving shift cables slide inside of. On your hand shifter they look fine - they don't move.

However I'm also talking about the casings inside the engine compartment. If the casings aren't bolted down securely you will have these problems. The cable inside the casing should move but NEVER the casing itself.

On your post 5 video, I can see (easier in full screen mode) the casing mount bracket MOVING as you shift which it should NOT be doing. [Note: You can only see the part of the bracket holding the Select cable as the other half holding the Shift cable is obscured by hoses]. This shifter cable mount bracket must be tightened down to where it doesn't move at all! Note: Be careful not to over tighten the bolts holding this bracket as they strip the tranny threads easily in the soft metal tranny. That is most of the problem. The rest is the tranny Shift lever SHAFT which I can see has excessive up/down movement as it rotates (see time 0:38-0:44 where it is really obvious). This is a very worn bushing on that shaft inside the tranny.
