I recently bought a 96' TSI AWD 5spd with 83k miles that is bone stock (except for a ACT 2600 and 9lb flywheel). The guy I bought the car threw in a 14b with minimal shaft play. The stock T25 has about the same play and still boosts fine. I would like to see the car at about 300 crank hp - 300 whp range. I figure that a 16g would be a better fit for my long term plans but I'm not sure how close the 14b will get me. I plan to get all the supporting mods to accomplish this goal.

Here is the dilema...

I know someone that needs a stock turbo in a bad way and could sell him either turbo I have for $100. I have been tight on time and am trying to decide if it's worth the time it would take to swap out for the 14b and sell him the T25 or if I should just sell him the 14b and wait until I can afford a 16g? I have never done this job before but I'm sure I can handle it. How much of a difference will I see with the 14b and how close can I get to my goals?

I plan to add:

3" turbo back
IC piping
Upgraded side or FMIC
BOV
AFC
Intake
Open filter
Fuel pump
Injectors
Dyno tune

Thanks for any advice!

go with a BIG 16g (a good mitsu one) or an evo III 16g. definitely good for more than 300 whp if you have the supporting mods...good supporting mods. Get a FMIC for sure, they loook beautiful and provide a good power increase compared to the SMIC. All the DSM wisemen and any DSMer who wants to see serious power out of their car goes with DSMlink and a wideband so as not to mess with an AFC..from what I can tell. Just ask around. All the other mods you listed were basically necessary and good choices. But, yes, I would sell the 14b or the t25, or both..you dont want that if you're going for 300 WHP. hope I helped you a bit. good luck-

Install the 14b and save the money for supporting mods right now. The 14b is no slouch and capable of 12's with a good tune. When you have all the supporting mods in place, then spend the money on a new turbo.

I guess to clarify I am trying to figure out if it is worth the time to upgrade to the 14b I have or do I sell it now and wait until I can afford a 16g? Will I notice much difference between the T25 and the 14b?

Until you have performed other supporting mods, it's not even really worth it to upgrade the turbo. Go ahead and sell it to your friend, then after you the exhaust upgraded and are well on your way, go ahead and switch out the T25 for a 16G.

sell the t25...keep the 14b (for a little while). That will be good for stock unil you can afford a big 16g and some supporting mods. Anyone disagree?

Install kit DOES NOT go without saying. Some people don't realize they require one, and they're not cheap. Especially considering he doesn't even have an exhaust yet, why should he spend a couple hundred dollars on an install kit for VERY MINIMAL gains, when he could just save and buy the appropriate supporting mods, squeeze some more power out of the turbo he has yet, and then upgrade it when the time is right?

Im not sure where you're shopping, an install kit is $100 at the most.. You have a good plan though... Jarero, I would recommend something like what he said.

SBR's Kit: $200 + shipping

Extreme PSI's Kit: $159 + Handling Charge Only

http://www.extremepsi.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=17009&cat=336&page=1

DSMparts.com Kit: $240 + Shipping "on sale"

http://www.dsmparts.com/customer/product.php?productid=67&cat=87&page=1

Buschur Racing Kit: $300 + Shipping

https://secure.buschurracing.com/ca...d=432&osCsid=97288a3179d73c4bb0d23c3bd5a77219

I mean not to be an ass, but that's where I'm shopping and $200 is very accurate for a good kit.

This may change things a bit...The person I got the car from also included an "install kit" with it. I didn't have any idea that's what it was until I read your responses and followed the links. I have everything that is pictured in the buschur link except the manifold gasket. If I sell the 14b I definately don't want to give him the kit with it especially if it is the same kit I need to install a 16g.

There are no $100 install kits unless you take some parts from an older 1G car and fabricate it to fit your 2G. All 16G install kits are in the $200-300 range.

Yes, the install kit for the 14b is the same install kit that you'll use on the 16G or EvoIII 16G.

To answer your question, keep the T25 for now, work around your supporting mods and then get an Evo III 16G.

Read this too - http://www.dsmtuners.com/sub.php?page=2gtupgrades

sorry..sorry..sorry. I should have specified the replacement kit 1g's.. But yes, I do see that he has a 2g, and im used to always buying parts used instead of new, thats why I assumed he could get one close at least close to what I paid. Still, my fault for assuming and not paying attention.

Thanks to all for their input and I have decided to stick with my stock turbo for now, sell the 14b and hold onto the kit for when I buy a 16g some day. I'm sure I will loose my buyer now since I doubt he will be interested in buying the turbo once I tell him he needs to buy an install kit for it. He is trying to sell the car and only needs a turbo since his car was broken into on Christmas. It was hotwired, driven behind a grain elevator, hood opened and the radiator jerked out of the way, cooling lines cut (automatic) and turbo removed. I feel bad for the guy so if anyone has a spare T25 feel free to PM and I will try to help the guy out.

Thanks for all your help and happy holidays!
