Looking for advice on how to approach this situation

Ok I have a my 95 up on jackstands rite now. I bought it not running and have been putting it back together since. Well I pretty much yanked all the wires I didn't need in the engine bay and deleted all the emissions, a/c, etc. The starter plate is not in so i have to pull the tranny and the clutch/flywheel off to get it back on but I also have plans to redo the timing components.

Question: from experience, am I better off pulling the motor/tranny together and doing everything out of the car since the tranny has to come out anyway? I know doing the timing belt will be much easier out of the car. Or should I just drop the trans and do that and then tackle the timing components next and leave the motor in place?

I'd have to rent/buy a puller if I decide to pull the motor but I'm not sure what I'd be better off doing at this point.

I was in the middle of doing a wire tuck before i realized the plate wasn't in, so its not going to be hard to disconnect all the wiring and I still have it all labeld.

For me to answer the question on whether to pull them out together is going to depend on if its a manual or auto, if its auto pull them out together( only bc the auto is HEAVY) but if its a 5spd just pull the tranny apart from the motor sinces it not that bad. The timing will not be bad to due with it still in the car you'll just need to take out the dr. side mount and situate the jack under there accordingly ( i used a block of wood and placed the jack on the oil pan) and it was rather simple with the motor in the car. Just take your time and it will all turn out good

If you're doing it alone, I'd say pull everything out as one. Getting the tranny back in a 2g requires at least 2 people, 3 if you want it to be simple. And it's even harder to keep the speed sensor intact on the re-install if you just pull the tranny.

Plus...BS removal is a hundred times easier with the motor pulled. Might as well do it if you're gonna have it out.

Thanks for the replies. Car is a manual. Balance shafts have already been removed. I could probably get a friend to help assist me with muscling the trans back in if I were to go that route. I'm still unable to make up my mind though

I also forgot to mention that it is FWD

Well we've always had an engine hoist at our house, and its easy to use the hoist to "muscle" the tranny back on if your going to rent one. If not a friend can help you then that will help save you money as well.
You need to look at your funds to decide whether or not to rent a hoist

There's no way in hell you're going to "muscle" the thing back in yourself even with an extra hand or two. You either need a stand or an endlessly creative mind to get it in there without one. 2g trannys are a pain in the asshole to install.

And just out of curiosity...how do you plan on using a hoist to install your tranny?
