Broken balancer belt caused bent intake valves, which required taking off the head...and this is what I saw. I think all that carbon may be caused by running rich? What are the different options I have to clean 'em?

Thats all normal. You could clean them but they will look just like after a few days. If you really want to, you can get a vacuum and just scrub the tops and let the vacuum pick upi all the debris.

Yea thats how they look. If you want to clean them and the deck I found that the spray gasket remover also lifts the carbon from the pistons and wipe it off with a rag but let it sit for a while to soak into the carbon its great stuff!!

What kind of questions should I ask a machine shop when bringing in my head for a rebuild?

Well the basic rebuild is disassembly, hot tank, New bronze valve guides, new valve seals and a basic 3 angle valve job and deck the head. you will be looking at around 500 all said and done.

I think most shops won't replace the valve guides unless they're cracked.

What I would really like to know is can I just bring the 4g63t head to any machine head shop and they would know how to rebuild it, or do these heads require special attention.

You are asking a very complex question. Most professional machine shops would prefer to deal with the repair shop doing the work, so now you are stuck. Under no circumstances do you want to appear to be smarter than those working on your parts. And yes you may be smarter you cannot come accross(sp) with all knowing all smart,. This will build resentment and your job will suffer.

If I knew how to be a diplomat I'd run for public office, know your subject, ask the right questions and stuff it back together. My apologies for the cryptic msg. but this is very complex question. Not meaning to be insulting, know everything about your engine, if you want something special then be prepared to make the argument supporting your cause. lll shot peen/knurl, cast/forted pistons etc.

Valves, yup, em engine got some, ain't no machine shop going to let your head out unless you are bidding on price.

Your question is quite valid, hopefully you undersatnd there is not perfect answer.

I just had my head in the shop here, and it cost $347.16

3-angle
new valve seals
tru-it up
pressure test it (2x)
tank it

I thought I overpaid honestly. Guess I did OK :thumb:
I only only paid $459 to have the heads Ported/polished cleaned, valve work, new springs/retainers/lockers all Comp Cam stuff on my old GTP. Must be that damn aluminum these heads are made out of :p .

While that may be a fair price consider that you could have done the job yourself. With moderate equipment expense and knowledge the poster could have done the job. ... Sure you can replace all the parts, but part of being a mechanic is knowing if the parts are junk or good. There ain't a snowballs chance in hell I can make a dertimitation or direct him to having the absolute best. Here is some salt make my engine run.

Can non-empty lifters cause bent valves when starting the car for the first time?

No - but Oil contaminated with Coolant can kill a motor quick - You neglected to drain your Coolant prior to pulling the Head & you now have Antifreeze in you Oil Pan - Please Drain Coolant & Flush the Oil pasages of your Block - Remove Oil Filter, Oil Drain Plug, etc thoroughly with Kerosene prior to firing this thing off.

Pistons are fine.

Regular treatments of SeaFoam or MCCC (Mopar Compustion Chamber Cleaner) can keep it looking nice in there (reduce hot spots, give you a lil more dispalcement  ).

I get what you're saying, but getting rid of that crud wouldn't have any effect on displacement. It would have a slight effect on C/R, however.

Thanks for the heads up...I actually did try to drain the coolant but realized I didn't get it all once the head was off.

Any other advice before firing it up for the first time?

The pistons look that way from burning gasoline. Or, whatever the hell that crap is coming out of the pumps here.

To keep them clean, look into water injection.

Hey defiant do you happen to know any quality machine shops around the Sacramento area?
