I have been running 3g lifters in my newly rebuilt engine for about 2000 miles now. A couple of them have always seemed to make a little bit of ticking. After installing a fmic, new injectors, new turbo, I idled it up to temp and everything sounded fine.
Today after fixing a fuel leak I started the car and it idled to about 160 degrees when I got a pretty loud lifter tick all of the sudden. I turned off the engine pulled the valve cover, everything looked fine. I started it up 30 minutes later and pulled the injector plugs one at a time to rule them out. While I was doing this the loud tick went away and the quiet ticking like normal continued.
It's not an injector, I think oil pressure built up enough to quiet the loud tick.
I guess my question is, how do I actually test these 3g lifters? It is not explained clearly anywhere that I have looked. I tried pushing on the lifters while they were installed in the head and they seem solid. (Oil pressure was at 40 psi when the ticking started and was at 60 when it went away the second time.)
