Leaking oil on timing belt. help please

I recently just put a new head, clutch, and timing belt on my 1991 tsi and ever since i did that there is oil getting on my timing belt and spraying up onto my hood. I have resealed my valve cover and it's still happening. the only thing i do see that isn't normal is that my water pump pulley is wobbling around and causing the belt to squeal when it's cool. Could this be my problem or should i look elsewhere. I've tried poking around but just like any other P.o.s. 91 tsi, there is oil covering the oil on the underside of the engine. Any help here would be much appreciated. Oh.. my oil pressure is usually right around the line where it should be and i have my balance shaft removed.

the balance shafts were eliminated before i bought the car so i have no clue. Whats the easiest way to go about doing that?
 
It's possible that the camshaft seals are leaking oil in to the timing belt area. Also, the water pump bearings could be shot allowing the coolant to leak out. If you have a pulley that is flopping around then that would put it higher up on the list of priorities than an oil leak. You don't want your water pump to quick working, the belt to sling off and the pully to bang up your hood. Remember the number of people who have had harmonic dampeners go out and wipe out the timing belt at the same time.

actually it all just started happening right after i finished my car up. I don't have any problems with coolant leaking. I just kinda figured it went with the DSMs: Big balls, deep pockets creedo. Whats the best way to tackle changing the water pump and sealing the camshaft seals?

Start by cleaning the engine, getting it spotless. Then remove the timing belt, unbolt the cam sprockets and the water pump. Unbolt the two front cam caps and pull the old seals. retorque the cam caps and install the new seals. Clean all the old gasket from the block and any corrosion fron the water pipe. Install a new o-ring on the pipe, gasket and water pump, coating the o-ring with coolant before pressing the pump on. Install new timing belt.

Depending on how many miles are on your engine and the other seals you might want to replace all the front seals not just the cam seals. Or you may wind up with more experence changing timing belts that you ever wanted.

thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. I'm also thinking i should check the oil pump sprocket nut. that could cause oil to get on my timing belt. Once again, thanks for being so helpful :thumb:
 
I mainly mentioned the coolant leakage as a possibility because sometimes it can get on the belts and spray upward. Some coolant spray can be darker than the green we're used to seeing and it MIGHT look like oil. Obviously touching it and feeling the difference is the only way to tell which it might be. I would say that if it's the oil pump sprocket then you PROBABLY would not see it being deposited on the hood since that's down low. Check the belts for oil saturation. If the belt's soaked then it's possible that the leak could be from anywhere. But if the belts are dry, the belts are the only source that can sling anything, then your leak is higher up like around the cam seal area. Just pull the top timing cover. It should be easy to tell if that's the problem or not.

Im also having the same problem. ONLY on the inside part of my timing belt is moist with oil. I have no idea where it could be coming from. I replaced the cam seals, replaced the front case, all the seals down there, and just did the wp (again, first one was bad). At first i thought it was at boost or an inefficient PVC system, so i vented that, but still didnt work. So, i figured that it was RPM related, not just boost. I have done a comp test, around 165-168 all 4.

The thing is, is that i have oil BEHIND the side mount. Now, how the hell can oil get up there, and be SO ACCURATE as to only spray on the left side of the timing belt. I currently have the whole damn right side of the motor off, so bump this thang. :thumb:
 
LOL mine is on the right side of the timing belt and all my friends seem to think it's the front main seal.. time to rip off the timing belt yet again. :thumbdown

let me know what you find out if you get it fixed
 
That seal could be your problem, but i doubt it. Ive gone over every possible way oil could get on the TB, but i have no clue where mine is coming from. Plus, the CAS plate is between the TB and the crank seal, so it would be pretty hard to just get on the right side of the TB. I am just putting my whole timing side back together today and hope that whatever was leaking... stopped, but probly not. OMG :cry: :barf:
 
My bishi leaked oil after I changed the timing belt as well and everyone said it was the crankshaft bearing. Come to find out it was my oil pan. The seal on the gasket had broke and due to the fact that the very edge of the oil pan runs right up next to the timing belt cover it was getting all over my timing belt. Just thought I would let u know what fixed mine.

sweet, i'll give that a shot. I can't wait to sell this car and buy something else :)
 
I had the same problem with my car a few months back. I ended up changing out all the seals (including camshafts) and throwing on new belts since I already had everything apart. After spending an entire day doing this, I figured out what the problem really was...a hairline crack on the edge of the valve cover itself that was shooting oil. So check for the easy stuff before you take your motor apart.
