i have a leak in the flex section of my downpipe... should i just take it to an exhaust shop and have them weld in a new flex section? also, is there an easy way so i can see exactly where it is coming from in the flex section? thanks.

ya thats pretty much the only fix for a flex leak.

any idea on how much something like that would cost? does an exhaust leak hurt my performance enough where i should get it fixed soon?

No, it doesnt hurt performance. It just sounds annoying to most people. If you can live with the sound, then I wouldnt even worry about fixing it.

Or, if you get lucky like me, and blow a huge hole in the flex pipe, now you have a straight pipe, thats really loud, but sounded pretty darn good for me. I have since got it fixed, sucks, because my CAT is dead, so i lost alot by fixing a part WTF

hm, ok. then ill worry about fixing other things first... like my clutch.

I just had the problem with my 95 TSi and the flex pipe was actually so badly cracked I couldn't weld it. Anyway after I put a new flex pipe in, it feels like it actually runs a little weaker.

Usually the exhaust coming from the downpipe is pretty black so you will see black marks on your flex section where the leak is.
