Larger oil filter?

i believe that the fram PH3950 is a larger capacity filter that will go in.

This is the filter I use. Its huge! It actually is bigger around than the housing but the rubber gasket is not on the outer edge so it seals fine.

Oh and if you upgrade to a full 3 inch exhaust, this filter is a must. Its very fat, but not as long as the regular filter. The regular one wont clear the exhaust. Even with this shorter fatty filter I notice my exhaust manages to melt the black paint off it. Its a tight fit.

A picture is worth a 1000 words, so consider this 3k words. Left is "stock" filter right is fatty filter.

I wish I knew exactly what car this "fatty" filter is for. I would like to buy somehting besides Fram and I used to have a buddy that worked at O'Rileys and he knew the exact part number and Id just show up and ask for the fatty filter and he would pull me one. It was was expensive ($10) so Im sure it was better than a Fram. Hell it said freaking NASCAR on the filter so I KNOW it was the bomb filter. /sarcasm

*EDIT* I just googled the part number and its originaly a GMC/Chevy truck filter. S-10/blazer with the 1.9 liter Isuzu engine according to oilfiltersonline.com

Wiki answers says it best: "Too many to list; but in general, it fits a variety of Mitsubishi engines from the early 80s up to the early 90s. It fits engines with a 1.4L, 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.6L, & 3.0L.

Some examples of specific applications include: Dodge Colt, Dodge Pickup, Mitsubishi Mirage, Isuzu Pickup, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, Plymouth Voyager, Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Mitsubishi Montero, Dodge Caravan, Chrysler Conquest."

I really dont use anything besides fram oil filters due to the fact that cheap filters let the oil drain back down cuasing the oil to have to make it's way back in the filter then thru the block etc.. on first start up, as fram does not due to the design of the oil filter it stops the oil from draining back out when you are done driving it, so when you first start the car you already have oil there and going to the head and sort. there are acouple other companys as well that use this design but i cant remember who they are.

isnt the K&N filter like that ?

^Dan2288 yes you are right about the K&N filter being the same. i couldnt spit it off the tip of my tounge. thankyou for that =)

The smaller one is the 2g filter and if you need a new gasket between your Liquid Oil Cooler & the Oil Filter bracket I found out you can use a 2g oil filter gasket! Fits perfect!

Hello,
I am the technical manager for FRAM filters. You can use our online catalog to look for larger filters that will work on your car. If you go to Fram :: Home - Oil Filters, Air Filters, Other Filters, click the link to "look up my parts". This will launch our online catalog in a separate window. Look up your stock oil filter, note the dimensions like thread size, can size, whether or not the standard filter has a bypass and antidrainback valve. Then you can search for a filter with a larger can that has the specs you need.

There is no real advantage to running a larger filter other than having a small amoun:thumb:t more oil available and slightly better capacity in trapping and holding dirt. You could gain this just by using the extended guard fram filter.

Now, if you want to go Hog wild, look in the racing section in the lower left corner. You could install a remote mount HPK600 filter block, this uses a 2 qt HP6 racing filter and also has a fine metal screen in the block to trap anything before its gets to the filter. this setup adds almost 3 qts of capacity to your vehicle, though it would be a tight fit under the hood of any DSM vehicle. If I can answer any filter questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected]

I see no big gain from the bigger filter. I use the extended tough guard filter no problems.

Now I want to see a pic of the clearance of the downpipe next to the oil filter, is it THAT close?

A regular "stock" size filter will not screw on the housing, its just too long. If you really fought it and pried the exhaust back while screwing the filter on, it COULD be done, but why bother? Just get the wide, short filter instead.

As is I use the short filter and it still bubbles and melts the black paint off the filter. Its just too tight a fit with 3 inch downpipe.

I would rather not let CARDBOARD filter my oil... Aka fram.

Yes and this is why Ive been searching for an alternative brand. Anyone ever wonder why its the cheapest filter on the rack? Would you want the cheapest surgeon performing your heart surgery? Course then again, all that cheap junk on ebay sells like wildfire, so what do I know?

Well in regards to a larger filter the short answer is no. There just isn't enough room.

Yes there are advantages to a larger oil filter. The larger the filter area, the better it filters. More oil capacity means cooler oil, and it takes more time for the oil to break down the more of it there is. I run a deep sump oil pan on my other car which nets me 2 extra quarts. Then I stepped up to a 1 quart oil filter and a 1 quart oil cooler. So I run an additional 4 quarts in my oil system.

That being said without a remote mount oil filter kit we're stuck with some pretty small filters. The exhaust is directly in the way. Esp. with my 3" DP.

As far as fram filters go....

If you actually go to there sight like suggested below, you'll find a ton of info. Also tells if they have the anti-drainback valve etc...

Extended guard filters have metal screen and standard media to filter the oil.

Extra guard uses fiberglass type media filtration

Tough guard uses synthetic media

I think the old fram filter myth gives these filters a bad rap. IMO they are just as good as any other standard filter out there.

I'm going to use the extended guard model XG3950. :thumb:

I'll have to remember that when I upgrade my down pipe. I really wanted a 2.5" downpipe but I can't find one. Everyone sells 3" though you can find them for cheap just no 2.5".
