UM is their a way to put a laptop screen in a car >>?<<
thanks
MIKE :talon:

you can put "the laptop" but just the screen...hmm it's not impossible but you would have to kno a lot about electronics LOL
what do you need it for?

You're going to have to be more specific about what you're doing and what you need it to do before I can answer that question. Yes, you can disassemble a laptop and put it in a car. No, you cannot unhook the LCD and use it for a monitor.
A laptop display is just the LCD. The LCD controller isn't built into the display, it's built into the motherboard. Each one is designed to work only with the particular laptop it was constructed with.
The problem with the laptop is that the LCD backlight isn't strong enough to make the display very visible in the daylight.

Trust me, I've done it :p

I managed to grab a 5.5" Vitek LCD that's quite bright during the day. Putting displays in your car 'on the cheap' takes a lot of know-how in working with them. I'd recommend just getting one of the car-specific displays. It'll be cheaper, save you headaches, and in general save time.

Hey man. I used to have a 5in LCD that I build into the case of one of my computers to read out CPU temps and stuff. Unless you are really deep into electronics I would highly suggest just getting something that is for sure going to work. Other wise you will be in for a lot of headaches.

If you are going to purchase a laptop to put it in to your car, I would recommend a tablet pc, especially one of those ones that fold over so you can write on them. They have touch screens, fold over capacbility, and a whole computer built in.

I think your situation is more like you have a broken laptop and you want to rip off the lcd screen and put it in your car. Even if you can get it wired and working, its useless because your car has no place to connect any kind of display without buying a headunit or some kind of tuning/logging software/hardware.

On the bright side, you can make some kind of fabricated fiberglass enclosure that mounts somewhere, in the glovebox or in replacement of the passenger airbag for example. Then run your laptop from there. Your best bet would just be buying a unit made for cars, because then you can just run it off the battery without having to change the AC to DC signal and worry about other things like that.

If you still decide to put the screen in, remember us and get some pics, it would definetly be a unique idea, but there is a lot of work behind it.

Depending upon exactly what you're trying to accomplish I think everyone's ideas are steering you down the right path to merge the computer and screen into your car with a minimum of hassle (if there is such a thing.)
One thing I would reccomend-if you're looking for a decent car-puter to do things like run DSMLink or such I would look at something like a tablet that was just reccomended or another solid option is to get a reconditioned Panasonic Toughbook (off Ebay or something). The Pent II one's can be had pretty cheap.

The reason I reccomend it for the car is because the computer is incredibly rugged, has a good battery life, and most of the models come with a touchscreen tablet style monitor that can be turned and then folded down on top of the computer.

I've currently got an old Gateway Pent III that's my DSMLink computer, but it's far from rugged so it stays in the case and most of my manipulation is done through a Palm Vx-the longer term plan is to get a toughbook whose primary function is to run the program, and I was contemplating going a step further by mounting that somewhere non-obtrusive and hardwiring it to an inverter and then having the display be one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/TM-868-8-TFT-LC...813191298QQcategoryZ48609QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Still very much a concept, but another idea to say the least, I hope it at least gives some more food for thought.

ok, here it is, I just sooo happen to be a computer technician, and to brag about my self, A Cisco networking associate and an soon to be engineer....ok enough

it is possible to put a laptop screen. Just required a little knowledge

If you open your laptop screen, its connected to the laptop by a ribbon cable (lets call this the cable on a desktop PC), what you can do is, get an extended one or make one yourself with some wires. If you havent gone through the classifieds, I have cases of laptops that I got from my dad's work this year when everyone got laid off.....I'm selling them cheap, I also have replacement screens....I have them in all sizes. If you want, I'll take a look at some and I'll make an extension, I'll test it out, and maybe i can make a classified on putting laptop screens in the glove or something?

Anyone up for buying a kit to put the laptop screen in your glove or something?

o yeah, I have some PC tablets that I would sell, they are enterprise level equipment (they are all made by NEC, thats where papa dukes worked)

I know this is not the classifieds, but I just thought answering the question and asking if anyone else would like one if I do it sounded like a good idea.....

I did research on this a long time ago, when I had a carputer in my old talon. But If I remeber right the 2 things you need are the screen and inverter (which is specific to the screnn you get). And the inverter is the expensive part. But this site sells all the shit you need: earthlcd.com There are other places online but I kinda like thi place because all the parts come together and it makes it so much easier.

I also have a carputer in mine. Basicly its a laptop mounted in there using a mount from jottodesk.com and wired with GPS, Wireless Net, Sound system, DVD, Voice Navigation, and of course dsm link. You should see the looks I get when people see dsm link running and then I ask them what there looking at through a mic which transmits out through the car allowing for the car to act as a mega phone LOL.

Its all easy to do.

Looking for more info though on computer intergration. There is a good site called www.carmp3.com for tons of intergration ideas. Will post some pics of my setup soon.
