There is a knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from under the dash board. The check engine light went on, I reset it and it went on again. Also, at idle it goes from 1000 to 1500 rpm back and forth. It's a 92 Talon Awd. I heard that it might be a bad ecu?? Any info would be great. Thanks..Ivan :talon:

you caps went bad... need to replace get repaired your ECU...

Napa has ECU's for 300 or less...

If yout ake out your ECU... then take of the front cover, look at the caps and see if they are leaking... if so then they need to be replaced, but it seems like thed amage is already done, so prolly need to replace the whole ECU or get it fixed, but im not 100% sure if you can get it repaired.

Any place where I can get a new ECU for cheaper. Should I bother with a new one?? Isn't there a place that fixes the ecu and adds some options??

There are several. :)

Your idle surge may or may not be related to any ECU problem, you should check your ISC first. If any of the coils are shorted they will burn up any good ECU you plug in.

You should always read out any CEL codes before resetting them. It's a valuable troubleshooting tool and so simple to do.

Do you have any other symptoms when the clicking comes from under the dash?

No, just the noise. It kind of sounds like if the turn signal was on, when it's not. The idle surge comes and goes, it dosn't do it all the time.

Sounds like the MPI relay clicking. Does the CEL come on for about 4 seconds when this happens? Any loss of power?

Two ways to tackle this. You could skip all the troubleshooting and open you ECU to see if the caps have leaked or you can start by making sure your battery terminals are clean and tight. Then work backward making sure the MPI fuse is good, that you have sloid power at the MPI relay, that the signal from the ECU stays low all the time the engine it running, that you have a good CAS, etc.
