I ran the error codes on my car today and it came up with a knock sensor failure in bank one, but I dont notice anything wrong.
My question is, how do you know when you need to change out the sensor for sure?

The reason you may not be "noticing" anything wrong is because the knock sensor may be fried. If this is true then the sensor won't notice any knock, which means timing won't be pulled so you may not notice a difference performance wise. Your best bet would be to replace the sensor with a new one. As long as you don't wail on your car it shouldn't knock, so just drive easy until you get a new sensor. I just replaced mine and it cost me 60 bucks for a new one at http://www.mitsubishi-parts-dealer.com/parts.htm .
