I have a 93' N/T Eclipse. It knocks like a Jehovah's Witness when I accelerate. Is this a valve adjustment problem, lifter problem, or maybe valve seat issue? I guess it could be piston rings, but I haven't done a compression test. Also, it puts out white smoke when it idles for more than a few minutes, or when you start it up after a few hours. If I can't figure it out, I guess I'll have to put it to pasture, because I'm not being paid to be the village mosquito sprayer.

PS: Thanks for your reply DSMBOB

Sounds to me like a rod knocking. It could also be a lifter b/c hydrolic lifters sound a lot like rod knock when they're bad. If the knock is very consistant, never to miss a beat, it is more than likely a rod.

I just watched your movie, and that is what my car sounds like. What do you suggest? New Rods, lifters, and a valve adjustment one time, or something else? Thanks.

i have a 93 Laser RS NT, it did the exact same thing. I tore the engine apart and found 2 rod bearings had spun and were chewed up. With little time, cash the best option for me was to buy a good short block, everything was ok so i rebuilt it that way. I have 10000 km's on it now and runs strong. This also gave me the oppertunaty to replace the 7-bolt engine with the 6-bolt block, hopefully not having to deal with crankwalk.
