So i just got a 95 talon tsi awd not too long ago, when i start the car and it is idling i hear a small clicking noise my friend told me the engine is knocking and it seems to be only when i first start the car up and it has not been driven for a few hours but after driving it for a few minutes and u stop and listen to the idle it no longer knocks any ideas what it could be? I am also going to do a compression test to see how the compression is other than that not sure what to do, pretty new to this car stuff.

I agree..change oil, or you can try Lucas Oil Stabilizer. If that doesn't work,
install 3g lifters. I did, and I haven't heard a lifter tick since.

Does it sound like metal against metal knocking or a rattle? If so it could be your self adjusting timing tensioner. When they lose pressure the tensioner arm slaps against a piece on the block. It makes a knocking noise usually from idle to 2k. I recommend that you get your hands on a stethoscope and probe around to see exactly where its coming from. If its coming from the belt side of the engine its usually either a harmonic balancer with a worn out bushing or the self adjusting tensioner, if its coming from the valve cover then its probably lifters.

I actually JUST got the oil changed its using valvoline synthetic oil, so it is good for another 5000km should i change to petroleum next oil change? and as for the knocking sound i am not too sure of the sound if it is metal on metal or a rattle it just sounds like a clicking but i'll definitely pay more attention and re post also, i will try to verify where the sound is coming from thanks for the help guys keep me posted

Is that oil different than what you usually use? If it is and this problem started just after the oil change i would say that you probably have lifters ticking (very common dsm problem). Like i said though get a stethoscope and see where its coming from. Also if you do replace them make sure you get some "3g" lifters, they have larger oil ports and dont have as much tendency to tick because of this.

I have the same problem here. I agree more then likely it is lifters. From what I understand changing oil or replacing them is the best you can do. If not just leave it be.

@1990clipse
The sound had already occurred before the oil change so i know it is not the oil, and i still have to get back to u about where the sound is coming from i haven't had the chance to check, but also the "3g" lifters you were talking about how much do they cost and how much would it cost on labor do u think?

Thanks
