I want to get a single sub for my car because of weight and room issues.

Anyways, is this a loud sub?

Kicker CVX124 (10CVX124)
12" Dual 4 ohm Comp VX Series Subwoofer (CVX12-4)

KEY FEATURES:

12" Dual 4 Ohm CompVX (CVX) Subwoofer

The most advanced and powerful round subwoofer from Kicker!

The round equivalent of the Kicker Solo-Baric L7 subwoofer

Power Handling:

*
Peak: 1500 watts
*
RMS: 750 watts

Impedance: Dual 4 Ohm

Frequency response: 20-500 Hz

Sensitivity: 87.1 dB

I don't have experience with that particular sub. But it says its the round equivalent of the L7 and L7's are good.

Are you just shopping around for one right now? If so, you should consider a single 12" Diamond D3 in a ported box. That is a sub that will really rock your socks off.

your sub will only be as loud or as good as your amp, i have a reletively simple setup. 1 type r (alpine) and a hifonics brutus 600 watt rms amp

This is true. And having a good box is as important as the type of sub itself.

JL audio FTW, I have 2x10" W3's in a sealed box with a 200x2 channel Kenwood amp. I like's it alot :p The reason for the 10's is I don't listen to a lot of "RAP", I listen to Rise Against, Hollywood Undead, etc etc. When you are tuning your amp for the way you want your subs to sound do NOT adjust any bass settings in the head unit. That is the biggest mistake I made with my system. It sounded absolutely horrible, like the subs were blown. Once you get done adjusting the amp, make minor tweaks with the head unit.

Something tells me your biased towards KICKER. :nono: Personally I think your paying for a name for a company that "created" the square subwoofer that just sounded like ass, loud ass. But to each they're own, what kind of music to you listen to?

Look at some cerwin vegas, re audio, orion, alpines.

In my tiburon I was running 3 infinity kappa 10's in a ported box on a 1200 watt amp and it really hit hard but was still very clear. I don't listen to too much rap myself and these subs handled the double bass kicks and. 808's of Motionless In White and other hardcore without an issue.

I think I wanna go with the kicker L7 in a ported box. My questions are should I do the 10" or 12" and should I do the dual 2 ohm or dual 4 ohm?

sorry I am a car audio noob.

That depends on the amplifier you are buying. A 12" subwoofer will usually have a higher SLP/DB rating than a 10" sub. I would go with a 12" over a 10 any day. If you can find a 15", go for it since you're getting only one sub.

If you are buying a mono amp that is stable to 1 Ohm, buy ONE dual 2 ohm Sub. If you are buying an amp that is can be used at 2 Ohms, buy ONE dual 4 ohm sub.

The Ported Kicker single sub L7 is NOT a dual voice coil (DVC) 2 Ohm or DVC 4 Ohm sub. This one - Kicker 08VS12L72 Ported enclosure with one 12" Solo-Baric L7 subwoofer at Crutchfield Signature is rated at 2 Ohms. You can buy any amplifier that can operate in mono at 2 Ohms or Bridged at 2 Ohms.

Here are some examples:

MTX Thunder Elite 801D Mono subwoofer amplifier 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms at Crutchfield Signature
mono subwoofer amplifier, 400 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)

Rockford Fosgate Power T600-2 2-channel car amplifier 200 watts RMS x 2 at Crutchfield Signature
200 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms (300 watts RMS x 2 at 2 ohms)
600 watts RMS x 1 bridged output at 4 ohms (2-ohm stable in bridged mode)

Personally, I'd recommend a MONO amp for subs over a 2 Channel amp since Mono amps are designed for subwoofers.

If you buy the 12" L7 ported 2 ohm Single voice coil sub and a Mono amp rated at 2 Ohms, wire it this way and you are done.

That sealed box is going to kill your sound.

Not necessarily true. The type of sub box depends on the music you listen to. If someone listens to slow bass, e.g. rap, rock, etc. a sub in a ported box will hit harder. However, you play music with fast beats and bass, like trance/techno/high energy stuff that I listen to, on a ported box, it sounds like crap. ;)

P.s. Holy crap, its 4:00 AM. Time for bed!

Look into an Audiocontrol. You can check out their website: Welcome. Look into getting an Epicenter. It will be the best sound investment you will make for your system.

I have been using their Four.1s for years. Puts the whip cream and cherry on top!

I Would say look into Component Subwoofers at Crutchfield.com they have some pretty good deals and my opinion if your a car audio newb. Do some research and see what you want That site have a very nice reviews to look at. I personally think JL makes the best sounding sub on the marked. We need your goals though just like in cars How much money do you have? What music do you listen to? 50/50 rock rap what do you listen to? Do you want it to be supper clear or just crazy loud. Things like that. I personally have 2 JL w 3 in a sealed box because i listen to every type of music almost. Sealed can hit more notes than vented, but vented sounds louder and hit rumbley (don't think that's a word) base like is in alot of rap. I also doesn't take as much power from your amp if it's vented. But yeah what are your goals my guess i since you don't know much about this stuff is you want it to sound decent and be pretty loud. But yeah give us your goals and we can help more.

Hey, got your PM, and sent you one, but I got this message when I tried to send you another one.

Here's the one you want - http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-KICKER-VS12..._Enclosures&hash=item5196b7b4e9#ht_3717wt_932

It's a dual voice coil (DVC) 4 Ohms, wired to a 2 Ohm load. You want your sub to be Dual 4 Ohm if you are buying an AMP that can put out power at 2 Ohms.

If you are buying an amp that is stable down to 1 Ohm, then you can start shopping for a DVC 2 Ohm sub..

The Kicker L7 in the link above will hit hard, I promise you that. I have used a lot of Kicker products and I will say that being loud is probably what they do best. If you purchase that one, it also eliminates the need to find a good enclosure since it comes in one matched to the sub by Kicker.

As far as the guy that said a sealed box would make the sound crappy: A sealed box doesn't make the sound crappy, it makes it crisper and clearer, but not as loud. Ported boxes are always louder, they just don't produce as good of sound quality in general. Ported boxes also take up more room because any given sub requires a larger volume ported box then it does sealed box. They can also be harder to locate the best location to place in the car because sound waves are emitted from both the cone of the woofer and the port. In some boxes most sound will come out of the port, in some others not as much. If you're going with Kicker though, stick with a ported box though seeing as their subs are designed to be loud first and foremost.

So if I get that sub and do the AMP at 2ohms will I get the 750rms?
