I noticed just recently that my engine is alot louder than usual. Its not lifter tick, and It does not go away. Its loud at idle, and When i even nudge the gas, it gets even louder.

It seems to come from my injector or timing belt area as I cannot pinpoint the noise.

It sounds just like a helicoptor, not as loud in a sense.

I'll have a recording tomorrow.

Take a screwdriver and put the metal end on the block and head and put the other end to your ear and try to figure out if its internally in the motor or if its just a belt rubbing.

If it is just a belt or pulley rubbing, take the upper timing belt cover off to make sure its not rubbing against the lower cover. Then, take off the accessories to see if any of them are rubbing. If it still rubs after that, you could check the crank pulley as they have cooling fins on the inside that can rub against the cover as well.

If its internally in the motor, take the valve cover off to rule out a seized lifter or roller arm that came off. If the valvetrain looks good, drain the oil and check it for metal shavings and then drop the pan to see what went on down there.

to me either that sounds like something us rubbing or you have an exhaust leak. the only reason i say exhaust is when you go back by the intake mani, it gets louder and sounds like its comming from there.

does the car drive fine?? boost fine??? when did the problem happen?? after heavy boosting?? you might want to do a compression test just to see. but to me with the car idling that good it does not seem likes its a blown head gasket. someone correct me if im wrong though

Car drives fine, and boots fine. The problem happened about 2 weeks ago. It happened out of the blue. I boost very rarely. I drive like a grandma because these gas prices have me whipped.

Same sound i had when im hermonic balancer went I would adive getting check out sooon because my gsx was making that noise for 3 days then i went to start it up and none of my belts moved so when I got mine done it almsot chewed through the timing belt cover.
BTW part costs 100$ from mitsu if that is your problem.

yeah when my harmonic balancer went, it was just all of a sudden, and it would rub while it idled, so i drove on it a few days before realizing that it has separated OMG .. cost me $145 btw straight from the dealership... the noise was just metal rubbing against a plastic cover and was annoying as hell.

So would I be ok if I just drove without the plastic timing belt cover off? Of course, its until I get the harmonic balancer replaced.

I would never advise to drive with any timing cover off, especially the lower cover, any little rock or debris coult get wedged in there and cause seriuos damage. You may want to pull the lower cover off to check if that's the problem but some of those bolts are not the easiest to get to. Good Luck hope you find the problem. :dsm:

oh that souns similar to what i just had.

first thing,

remove ALL accessory belts, AC, and Steering, alternator.. turn it on for a few seconds. you wont need to run it long to find out if the noise is there or gone.

if its still there then its internal.

i just had a problem with my engine from what sounded like a major knocking then it went to a buzzing.. turned out that my front balance shaft bearing worked its way out and my balance shaft was spinning freely knocking the shit out of my block.

could me many things and its hard to pin point it cause the sound travels through the engine so easily...

have you replaced any belts lately? tensioning them too tight will cause fast wear on moving parts, like the crank, oil pump, balance shafts, etc... and if you did the timing belt your rear shaft could be out of phase if you didnt all ready do it.

Nope. I didnt touch my engine since I put my 14b on about 2 months ago. This is a wear and tear situation I believe.

My engine makes the same noise.

Mines gets louder as it revs.
I also have a little bit of metal shavings in my oil, so Im guessing its either a Rod bearing or main bearing.....or even something else.

My timing belt was also just recently replaced too.

That noise in those first video's sounds like when I trashed one of the balance shaft bearing on my rear shaft

OMG
