Hi, i have done a keyword search and gathered some info. Ia m looking at buying a 97 gst that has a loud knocking noise. What should i really look for to determine the problem of this car. I am goiong to look at it in a few days. Also whats the most it could cost in the worst case scenario. Appreciate any help im new to the import scene.

Worst case would be crankwalk where the motor just locks up. How loud is the knocking. DSM's are known for lifter tick but if it is a knock it could be a spun rod bearing or main bearing. Get the flywheel checked for endplay if you can. Other than that, see if it is coming from the oil pan or head.

Like Adam said, these cars are NOTORIOUS for lifter tick or valve tap. If you open the oil cap and it seems to get louder, it probably lifter tick. All it will cost to fix that is a Valve cover gasket kit, some RTV sealant, and 2 cans of carb cleaner, you're looking at about $30-$50 for repairs.

I can no comment on the crankwalk, other then about 1 out of 3 are likely to get it. All 3 of my DSMs have 6-bolts, which do not have this problem.

been looking for information on my problem. this afternoon after coming back from va beach to fredericksburg, va the car ran perfectly fine at 16psi on the 14b turbo(which was swapped in last weekend) had no problems with the car. got back to fredericksburg and the oil light started to flash soo i checked the dipstick and it was about a quart low. went and bought 2 quarts just to be safe. sure enough only needed one and it was reading fine on the dipstick. drove back to the house everything was cool. then about 3 hours went by at home and i went to get in the gsx and leave and i notice the AT light was on and also the battery light was on. soo im like wtf. pop the hood everything seems to be connected. turn the key make sure belts and such are moving like normal. then i hear this loud ass tap noise sounds like its coming from behind the motor.(near firewall area) soo extremely loud TAP. i turned the car off and called a friend. from what i told him he wsa thinking possibly balance shafts heated up and then seized up up the balance shaft itself. (idk). i was thinking lifter tap due to the fact the oil light had came on after my trip back home. is there any way to check safely without screwing the engine totally. i really am hesitant to not turning the car on and running the motor due to the fact i dont want the balance shafts to be either part of.. the problem and having metal start going to the motor in the oil. . .

anyway without starting the motor to check where the tap is coming from. thanks

I can try spinning my hand. I never heard of the tapping being caused by the BS, but that does not mean its not possible, only that I've never expeirenced, wether in mine or others.
