I JUST FIRED UP MY GST!!! i let it run for about 3 mins and then turned her off due to and oil leak. I have a couple questions though, the valves were ticking....how long does it usually take for the hydraulic lifters to stop ticking? it is a rebuilt engine and im not sure if i bent my valves or anything but it wasnt studdering or missing or anything. second question is that it was running 2000 rpms constant. will it eventually drop down or do i need to check something?

I'm not sure about the ticking, but the rpms at start up is normal.

oh yea it was hard to crank up as well. i believe it was due to bad gas or something. she sat for at least 2 months.

IT can take a while for the lifters to fully prime sometimes. As for the rpm, that is pretty normal. When it warms up it will idle down to a normal rpm.

about 2 grand is normal for and idle? i only let it idle for about 3 minutes too

2k is normal for a cold start, first start-up. You will more than likely have to adjust your idle once you get it warmed up, however, you need to get it up to operating temp first before finding out for sure.

Also if this is a fresh motor like you say, starting it up and then shutting it off like that isn't that great for break-in.

It is a fast idle to warm the car faster, once the car warms up it will go down to about 850.

thanks to all of you guys for the info. it was pouring out oil where the balance shaft eliminator plug goes...its the one cap that is by the oil pump gear. it had a bolt in it and i didnt think i needed the cap on it but i was wrong. thats why im in the newbie section(you learn from your mistakes!) oh yea do you think i could have messed anything up by shutting it off that early?

You'll be ok, obviously you had to shut it off because of the leak. Just get it fixed and then get it up to operating temp, set timing etc.

Did you prime the motor prior to cranking it for the first time? My ticking went away after about a week or so after rebuilding the motor using new 3g lifters.

As for the rpm, it's normal to be high but I would check for boost leak or vacume. Just double check the hoses. Are you running coolant through your tb?

yea i think so. i dont have coolant in it now though because i just installed a new water pump and im letting it seal up. I just cranked her up to make sure it was running...and she is!

Its not a good thing to just run a water pump dry especially when it has never seen water. I wouldn't start it again without coolant especially if you plan to let it run to operating temperature, would not be a good idea.

IT won't hurt the water pump to not have coolant in the engine. It has a sealed bearing. The coolant in no way lubricates the pump.

Hmm I was told by a local mechanic that you don't want to start the car without any coolant in it and let it run for awhile as its bad for the pump. Learn something new everyday.

ticking from valvetrain will be gone in 5 to 15 minutes. doesnt take long. i didnt prime my oil pump either. my bad

It's not the pump that is being hurt, it is that the engine will overheat badly with no coolant in it.

I think youll be safe with the coolant issue 3 mins didnt even get your engine to op.temp. I dont think you would have warped anything. Just make sure there is coolant in there if when you have it idle for a long time. 1-2 hours on a rebuild is what you should do to my understanding.

How would you know it didn't get to operating temperature or overheat? You don't. There is no coolant to warm the sensors. The coolant is a lot of mass and takes a while to heat up. Without any in the engine at all it can reach dangerous temperatures quickly.

Your right I dont know. Im just saying I think he will be ok in my opinion. I blew the water pump out of my first GST and granted the engine never ran dry it was getting dangerously hot and I didnt warp anything. I just made sure it had coolant until I got it to the shop. Im just trying to look on the bright side for him thats all.

its called spot heating. the temps in the head and cylinders go up REALLY fast. without coolant that heat cnat be dispersed evenly and shit hits the fan. im hoping ## engine is fine. your most likely ok after 3 minutes but just remember u need coolant next time. good luck bro, congrats on a running dsm!!
