so i just stumbled on a 96 gsx that was basically babied by an older couple and i want to know where to start with basic boltons and maybe some more i just got out of ait for the army and just got my bonus so i have around 10k to work with any ideas???

If your really planning on making power I would look into Engine Management. I know its early to start thinking about it but its really the best time to do it.

If thats a little to advanced I would start with the upgrade path on the website. Do exhaust, intake and basic bolt ons. Dont start with fuel or changing boost unless you get the right components like a wbo2 and an EMS.

go ahead and upgrade your exhaust, and throw some new plugs and wires on there, and get a new fuel filter and change the oil. for the rest do a little searching i believe under the tech section they actually have a outlined upgrade path i would take a look at that for some ideas

all the maintenence is up to date so im all go ahaha any ideas on a good header and exhaust upgrade???

btw im a diesel mechanic in the military so i have no problems with mods and im looking to make 400hp

im wanting to do a 6bolt swap with a 4g64 crank and fully built bottom end i got the block already just wondering where i should go from there

You should look into a evo 3 or fp race exhaust manifold. Exhaust wise look into a megan racing downpipe and either a thermal 3" or HKS.

And when you say 6bolt 2.4, do you have the G4CS block like for an exampe from an early hyundai sonata? Or a 4g64 which is a 7bolt?

Or are you looking for a 2.3 stroker which i highly advise you not to build they tend to fall apart.

Based on what info do they tend to fall apart? I know a lot of people running them with no problems. A little insight maybe?

well should i not worry about the manifold now and just worry about the turbo back system? ### it said i didnt need to really worry about the manifold at first on the site

Well a 2g exhaust manifold is pretty efficient, especially if its ported. But why go throught the porting when you could get an fp race mani for about $200.

Get them all at once, you did say you had 10k to spend. Also start looking into a turbo upgrade. Like a Fp3065, precision gt30r or gt35r. Look into supporting mods like larger fuel injectors, bigger fuel pump, and ecmlink, wideband for tuning.

i also run a 2.3 stroker pushing crazy power and had not 1 prob out of it. just fall apart LOL:ohdamn: fall apart:thumb: i will keep an eye out for that

Sounds like you've got you goal, be sure about it. 400 hp should be something you can work on one piec at a time.

Just that people, and me. spend a lot of time and money on one setup, only to change it out to go bigger.

I also recomend reserch, lots of it,

Buchar racing has also has a good "upgrade path" that is informative without trying to sell you parts you don't need. Not saying this site does that in any way, I just like multiple ideas, perferably for differnt places.

Oh ya, and get a big bag of cash.

As myTalonTsi said, its a good idea to pick the turbo you want to run, then assemble the exhaust, intake, exh mani, wastegate if needed. That way you can get stuff that compliments each other, and works together.

But also fuel and management must be taken care of first.
$10k is a good chunk of money, should get you to your goal with some budgeting.

^^How many miles do you have on your set up? From the people i know locally their 2.3 strokers didn't last more then 20k. They don't hold up plus you have to spend the extra $400 on a engine damper for it to be reliable. My friend recently had a 2.3 built very well, clearances were perfect, 500 miles later it retired and now hes putting it back to 2.0 with a new eagle crank.

Maybe cause your buddy had his engine built by tards and didn't replace shit he should have replaced. You can't just replace rods, pistons and a crank and be done. My build is going to be done right the FIRST time. Why skip steps and try and rush power? That is the problem with too many DSMers...they try and rush goals in order to satisfy their needs and then wonder why their engines get smoked. Watch "How To Blow UP a Talon" on youtube...that was probably your friends car. LOL.

Most likely these cars where over revving the motor or not letting the motor correctly heat up before driving it. Strokers put a lot more stress on the internals when revving above 7000rpms than a 2.0L. Also when you dont warm up the motor you get piston slap because of the forged aluminum pistons but you get that when you have them in a 2.0L also. Both of these together can cause bearing to wear out so you see a lot of guys having to refresh the motor every 20,000-50,000 miles. Also why I like OEM built motors.

Enough said 2slow, have fun brah.

My point. But no matter how good its built they still tend be take a dump. I personally still prefer, 2.0, 2.1, 2.4.

why dont you call magnus and ams and tell them to stop making 800+hp on the 2.3 setup because they are going to fall a part. i have a 2.3 stroker and turn 7500rpms all day long with no pobs and it has about 15000 miles on it now. (any) engine will have probs if it is not built the correct way or is miss used look at how many people kill 2.0l i guess i better not buy a 2.0l because some dumbass killed his engine pushing 60lbs of boost on stock rods. this is not a post about 2.0 vs 2.3 engines but i have had 3 2.0's and this is my first 2.3 and i love it,crazy low end power. it all comes down to who you talk to thats the bottom line

I was giving the OP my opinion. Alot of us here in WNY resent 2.3's and i stand by that, their so much fun to tune huh?

Enough said i wasn't starting something between 2.0's and 2.3's.

WTFWTF what does the displacement of an engine have to do with tuning?
