Wondering what turbos can be bolted on that would produce the most hp, within a reasonable teen age budget at about 400 dollars a month

Honestly upgrading your turbo with these cars also requires you to do a full maintenance on the engine first then doing a few engine upgrades before you even put the turbo on or there's a risk of damaging the engine... Not to mention that depending on how high in psi you go you may need to get a new fuel pump/ injectors and tune

Thanks, would a boost controller and a fmic make any significant gains or would I have to still upgrade all the internals first

The internals are stout enough for the average DSM'er. You can up the boost on the stock fuel system and be fairly safe but do some research on fuel cut. You would also want a boost gauge and wideband before even thinking about a boost controller.

And we can't stress enough about the importance of maintenance here. Timing belt would be the first thing to do if you don't know when it was done last. Spend some time researching and learning and just browsing through information. And... stay away from cheap Chinese ebay parts.

If you are unsure about something you can search the question/answer out and find out the answer in a previous post or thread. This site has an abundance of information!

Upgrade path AFTER maintenance is done

Cool, I just had ALL of the belts changed... Timing, fan... So I should be good on the maintenance side of things just looking for the next step

Next step is to preparing for a larger turbo. Your fuel needs will go up and you will need a way to monitor for boost leaks, boost creep, and proper fuel ratios. Buy a boost gauge and wideband first as others have suggested. Next, find a logging solution and start monitoring your setup now. Learn what the information means before going any further. You'll need a larger fuel pump as well. Depending on the pump you go with, you may need an afpr. You'll need a way to tune too, either DSMLink or a blackbox/evo ecu and ecuFlash. Both of those actually have logging options (evoscan for ecuFlash), so consider saving up for one of those first. Depending on your HP goals, you may need larger injectors too. Cheaping out of any of these steps will likely cause you to blow your motor.

Realize now that building power is a slow, methodical, expensive process. On a high school budget, you probably won't be ready for a bigger turbo for at least a year. I've been there, and it takes a lot of patience.

After all that, you can decide what turbo you need. While there are a few common turbos that most people go with, there are literally dozens of options for different goals. You'll need to know how much HP you want to make, and what you want to use the car for. Keep your goals realistic for your budget. On your budget and experience level, you'll probably end up with a 14b or 16G at most. Both of those are good turbos that you can get fairly cheap. You have about 190HP stock, I would say set a goal of 220 HP, which the stock injectors can handle, and a 14b is more than capable of producing. That's plenty of power for a teenager and is an obtainable goal.
