Ok i am flipping out right now. i just dropped my oil pan and i took a break while i was waiting for it to dry and like a dumbass i walked out and thought ill move my car and clean up all the mess under it. Regardless, i feel like a complete dubass and im scared to death, im not starting this thread to be ragged on or treated like im stupid i just want to know how serious of damage could be done to a motor running for about 15-20 seconds with no oil. I know it is perminant damage, but how bad?

I could be wrong but, thought his car was NT. I think he will be fine for what little time it was running.
You're correct assuming the O.P.'s profile is up-to-date. Sometimes I automatically assume it's a 4G63 tech question as 420A tech questions are normally started in the 420A section of the site.

Regardless, if any turbo DSMers happen across this thread they'll double-check before starting their car following an oil change based on the info I've provided.

the OP took off the oil pan to re-tap the threads that were stripped out for the oil return...then he mentions 6 bolt swap...sounds like he has a turbo to me,even if he didn't update his profile to reflect that:)

Rod bearings can usually survive being 'kissed' which results in surface wear, but as long as you didn't start the car then rev it up to 3k you're probably fine.

I see. I am glad to know that myself. My car is a turbo and would never do that on purpose or by accident with my car but, have done that at work with others working on the machine as well and got in a hurry.

Personally, I did not know the turbo could be hurt that quickly without oil flowing to/from it. I will remember that as well.

Thanks. :)

you are correct and my apologies on that. brain fart:ohdamn: on the 6bolt and he does need to update his profile.

Thanks. and sorry for the confusion

Man you guys don't give 4g63s enough credit. I can almost garuntee you will be fine unless your engine was already on it's way out.

I as well drove a good 4 or 5 minutes without oil when my DP came off and slit my turbo drain, I had not noticed cause I was dumping out the DP ANYWAYS!

Yeah, the engine still runs, that happened a year ago.

As someone else said, you still had oil on the bearings, you should be okay.

"SHOULD"

Oh hey, don't feel too bad, stuff happens. Whatever. Live and learn! I usually put my keys far away from my car and pull the battery whenever I pull the oil, just as a rule of thumb so NOBODY tries to start my car.

I wish I was that lucky...I'm on engine 3 after stupid oil problems like that with less than 5 minutes of no oil =/

Just a side note ,You wont get any metal from the bearings with a magnet. they are not magnetic.

Well i toook it out for a drive today and babied it for about 15 mins and parked it, checked for oil leaks and whatnot and i was all good, then i took it out and turned the boost up to see how it did under pressure and it drives better than before. The reason it drives better is cause i swapped my cracked 1g mani out for an fp. The only thing unusual i did notice was the turbo whines a little more when its spooling up which at first i blamed on the fact that it saw no oil, but i also realized that with my cracked mani i wasnt seeing full boost till litterally 4k rpm on a 14b. So the sound could just be the turbo spoiling up right. Regardless it is running better than ever. And yes i go have a 4g63 i just havent updated my profile information because my car is about to go through a lot and i dont want to have to update it constantly.
