So i got a jdm 4g63, EVO 2, and i cant figure out why the intake cam has four spokes and the exhaust cam has five, while every other DSM with stock gears, that i've seen or owned, have five on both cams. The only thing i have found that seems to be solid is that the 4G64 DOHC gears are four spoke. My question is: What is this cam gear doing to my cam timing as opposed to stock DSM spec., if anything at all?:hmm:

You may have a 7 bolt intake cam and a 6 bolt exhaust cam that the previous owner never switched the cam gears on. maybe they used the more aggressive 1g exhaust cam in place of the stock 2g piece. I could be wrong, just throwing some ideas out.

its a 6 bolt motor, does that mean someone put that intake cam gear and possibly camshaft on that motor for a particular reason? i will search more 2g and evo3 stuff for now. thanks guys!

Dude, I don't wanna burst your bubble but the evo 2 came out in 1994 I believe (1993 at the earliest) I.E., evo 2 motors are 7 bolts. If that's a 6 bolt motor, it's not an evo motor.

evo 1, 2 are 6 bolt, evo 3 is 7 bolt. unlike dsms, they got 6 bolts for a little longer than we did. its a 1994 model year evo2 motor, i pulled it from a front clip.

This may sound odd, but someone may have broke a cam gear and replaced it.

I found pieces of cam gear in my engine bay when I pulled my engine. One was wedged in behind some wires. The other was on top of the water pipe.

Don't ask me how they got there, but they were there. I know the guy who had the car before me "snapped a timing belt", but that's about it.

that broken cam gear sounds like a possibility, i did't mention that the upper timing cover was broken and there was a small cut on the timing belt when i got it, never even thought of that until now! so if that gear was replaced with a 2G style gear, back to my original question, what is the difference in cam timing? ...if any:hellyeah:

sooo... 1994 evo2 front clip, turbo #'s match evo2 16g, six flywheel bolts. my other option at the time was evo3 front clip w/7bolt, as advertised. did someone make these at home? i dont know but whats up with my cam timing?

everything looks good to the eye and it runs fine, but what raised the concern was while reading into de-stroked 2.1L 4G64 DOHC setups, i found that you have to get O.E. Mitsu. 4G64 DOHC gears (which are four spoke) even on the 4G63 head because the deck hight is taller. i think the difference was like half a tooth or something. i always wanted to degree-in my cams anyway, i guess i'll find out:banghead:
