Quick question, but are all JDM motors 6bolt motors?

my 7bolt just blew (142k, spun rod bearing), and id like to get the car on the road so I checked with Attarco and they have 3 in stock. Then I come on here and do a little searching and find a post or two stating the JDM motors are only 6bolt motors. Id like to not even mess with that and stick with 7bolt so its a sinch to swap it (I almost have the motor out).

k cool I actually just called them just now to verify and they do have 7bolt motors. Unfortunately the have none yet ready to sell, which isnt what the dude told me earlier this week. Their reasoning is the jdm engines dont have the same motor mount locations as usdm ones, so his machinist will need to drill/tap for them. Does that sound right?

Doesn't sound right to me. Shouldn't all 7 bolt blocks have the same mount holes????

How much are they charging if you don't mind me asking?

You can get complete engines off craigslist or here for 150-300 depending on condition. I mean all you need is a block.

That is correct..I think they do mount differently..

Why don't you just get a new block instead of a whole engine??

I wanted to get the car back on the road this weekend, since were down to 1 car between me and the GF. Then yeah, I was going to take the motor that is being pulled and use it as a starting point for some sort of nice build.

Ya that makes sense.Me and my girl are down to 1 car with my turbo being shot..But that's usually the case so we have made 1 car work for some time now..Since the dizzum Usually doesn't even get driven when it isn't down..LOL

Why would be need a new block? spun bearings does not mean he threw a rod. just needs rod and crank. check your local engine parts center.

I just wrote this up for another thread

for me it was $300 even, but I shopped around for better prices.
$1500 for a rebuild? you're crazy

I'm in the middle of a bottom end rebuild too.

polished crank and rods- $180
bearings-$80.
headgasket-$35

I'm lucky because the engine was recently rebuild by previous owner so rings looked new and other gaskets are fine. but misc gaskets and seals would be $100 tops. The felpro composite has been ran to 30psi without problems, and it was $32 at autozone.

Alternatively it's $260 for a crank kit (reman crank and bearings), and $25 per remanufactured rod. A wiseco piston ring set is $32 shipped on ebay. and before you rag on reman cranks, people have made 700hp on cut cranks.

full bottom end rebuild for under $500, and peace of mind knowing everything is in good condition.

I know someone with a spare good 7bolt bottom end .. Also i've gotten some japanese 7bolts from CNS MOTORS in S El Monte ca. CNS Motors, Inc. - Home of Used Japanese Engines and Transmissions

PM me with their contact info and ill give them a call.

ill probably call CNS too. Thanks for the lead!

Yeah im having to drive her to work and be there 6am which takes about 15min, then me driving another 45min to get to my work coming 15min back the way opposite way. I hate getting up early and being at work when nobody is there to talk to (get more done though, but its boring as hell).

6 bolts came in the galant's and evo1 and 2's..The evo 3's were 7 bolts..
Not quite, 6 bolts in galants then they change to 7 bolt starting from evo-1 onwards. So all early evos are 7 bolt. Btw, there are also 7 bolts from Mitsu RVR which came with the TD04HL turbo (the oil squirt in these are different then the evos)

Mount location is probably different but drilling & tapping doesnt sound right, you'll just need to carry over the mounting brackets from your existing motor to the JDMs, its basicly plug & play.

good info here...

...me and my dad were planning on dropping a engine his 98 gs

You will not be able to put a 4g63 in that GS with any sort of ease, for most people it's virtually impossible. At least not a DSM based 4g63. The updated engine from a newer evo (same engine style in the evo 8/9) would be easier, although there's still a TON of work to make that work right.

If he wants a turbo car, either buy a factory turbo DSM or build and turbo the 420a (which is what is in your dad's GS).

My JDM engine bolted right up in my 1G back in the day..

If anyone believes that it only has 60K on them when they buy it..I have a Bridge I want to see your too cheap. I lived there 5 years. I know for a fact that they have way more then that on them.

Majority of the jdm 4g63 7bolts are out of the mitsubishi RVR. you will get the evo3 intake manifold, 450cc and a tdo4hl 13g turbo. its super rare if it has a 16g turbo, if so. u got the galant or evo3 motor. otherwise its a RVR. trust me i shop and bought a jdm 4g63 and 100% of the time i spent looking at the motors they were all RvR.

How did you end up spinning a bearing?

I ran it low on oil for a week or so daily driving it. When I finally did an oil change only about 2qts came out. Replaced with some Peak oil that was on discount and a new filter. Few days later i heard slight rod knock on the way to work. Still made it in about 10mi, then tried to limp it home, made it about another 10mi before slight rod knock turned into catastrophic sounding impending doom.

I believe the bearings had premature wear from running low on oil, and then the fresh cheap peak crap just put the nail in the coffin.

It runs now with the attarco jdm 7bolt which I just read below is from a Mitsu RVR. Had to transfer pretty much everything else from the USDM engine though, I mean EVERYTHING save for the oil pan, block and head. Intake, exhaust, brackets, brackets that hold brackets, all slightly and annoyingly different. Some parts "looked" the same but their machining of surface areas might be 3-5mm shallower, or deeper so the next item fits weird or not at all, so you had to backtrack and figure out why its not working. We thought wed have that motor in that weekend.......took 3 weeks to finally get it in. Took me a few days to hammer off the flex plate centering dowel that sits inside the crankshaft that manual cars dont have and with it on, it wont let you bolt on the flywheel. Just little stuff like that. Anyone thinking this is a quickie swap, youre in for a rude awakening.

And on top of that, still think I need to replace the head gasket. I can run the car for a while but as soon as I drive it hard or at freeway rpm for extended periods magically I will run low on coolant. 180psi compression across the board too. Think theres a pinhole leak and its just pushing coolant under boost or high rpm running, and no, absolutely no leaks anywhere. everytime I drive it for 30-40min ill come back and let it cool off and still put another half quart to top it off. Thought it was my heater core (bent the bungs so they wouldnt seal, that was some of the issue originally) so I bypassed it and still losing coolant.

Yeah unfortunately getting back into the swing of things, its a TD04HL 13g. Gonna try to see if I can sell it along with that Evo3 RVR intake manifold it came with. The motor came with the top mount and everything. Always wondered what it was from, I couldnt find jack shit on it. Thanks for the info!

That RVR looks like it would make one hell of a sleeper.......
