Used the kit on my fiances 96 tsi just over the weekend and it made assembly very simple with the cam holder and tensioner tool. If you are doing a water pump I found that using a vise to compress the hydraulic tensioner was still easier until the tensioner is bolted back down. Once the tensioner is bolted back down then the long threaded rod becomes handy because if the timing belt isn't set correctly you won't have to remove the tensioner and use a vise.
