issues with my starter

I have a 1995 Eclipse GSX and recently just got a new starter. I replaced it but now it will not start. The issue is the solenoid shoots out but does not spin. Also the ground wire comming from the starter gets hot. Anyone know what it could be?

Drew and I are working on the same car. Basically, we just replaced the flywheel because the previous starter killed it. We replaced both the starter and flywheel. We took the starter to pepboys and they tested it, worked fine.

We are sure it is hooked up correctly because when we switched the red and black cable, the battery sparked. Could this be a bad solenoid line? Would running our own wires be a bad idea?

Also as Drew said, the negative battery line gets very hot after we attempt to start the starter.

The negative cable must go from battery negative post to starter casing mounting bolt - not to block. Also all connections must be clean and tight.

Well, we are idiots. We forgot to hook up the ground to the transmission. In addition to that, we hooked that ground to the other post on the starter which we recently found out was not supposed to be used. We could have fried all of the wiring in the car!

Everything hooked up properly, (only two cables going to the starter...) it fired up first try!
