Somewhere in BC,
Hey guys is the 49178-01450 = evo 1 16g turbo a good turbo to rebuild???

#I have the evo 3 16g installed right now but found out its a fake eBay special is it better to keep the eBay special or rebuild the TDO5H 49178-01450 = evo 1 16g turbo that i also have in a box or should I buy a evo 3 16g turbo?

Thanks for your reply My ebay special evo III I think is starting to go so I need to buy a new turbo not sure what to get or if the Evo I turbo is a good turbo is it worth gettin it rebuit? How does it compare for boost and power compared to the evo III eBay one that I have ? Or should I not bother with the Evo I turbo and try and buy a different turbo altogether??

That turbo is a great turbo (the real MHI turbo, not the ebay version), you can search on it's potential flow rates and so on by simply researching "Big 16g" on here, tons of info. Definitely worth the rebuild considering buying it new now will cost you a pretty penny (1000$ range). What I would do if I were you is keep the turbine housing from the ebay version and keep it as a spare for the real 16g if it's housing was ever to crack.

That's a great idea thanks I'll keep that eBay special as a spare and Ill get this Evo I turbo rebuilt hope it will handle 15 boost really good, and I'm hopping it won't be costly to rebuild

Shouldn't be too expensive to rebuild (specially if you do most of the work yourself) If you know someone that works at a truck repairing station you could get it rebalanced for cheap. The Big 16g will easily do 15psi of boost, people run it daily at 20psi so you're good there too. Just think of the ebay version as a cheap version of the real one. Hence the real one will be better and more reliable if rebuilt correctly.

Evo I turbos are the same as a standard Big 16G. It's a fine piece.

If the knockoff is already on your car you might as well save the Evo I turbo as a backup...you'll need it.

I'm surprised you didn't suggest that he rebuild it now and save himself bits of turbo going through his engine.

I know a guy who rebuilds turbos ... jusmx or something like that ;)

Right on thanks so much for the comments I'll have to check out my rebuilt options for the evo I 16g

Cool decided to send it to Jus to get the evo I 16g rebuilt I hope I'll notice a bit power difference because I know when I had my original smaller garett turbo my car was so quick and when I put the evo 3 eBay special on it actually ran slower in my opinion , I hope the real evo I 16g will be as responsive as the small garett I had and quicker then the fake evo 3 16g :)

The ebay turbo threads I've read have shown ebay specials spooling as much as 1000rpms later than their Mitsu counterparts.
If the small garrett you're referring to is a T-25, you will notice a difference in power, but the 16g won't come on quite as fast. The wait will be worth it though. :)
