It doesn't seem like the auction has enough information to make that determination. It would help to at least know what car the transmission came from.

Also, please use more descriptive thread titles in the future.

Sorry about the thread title. If anything will it be a shorter final drive (higher rpms on freeway but quicker car) or is it possible that it will be longer (slower car but more fuel efficient)? thanks!

Never mind, the part number was sufficient to find the type of transmission. It looks like it came from a 1st generation base model SOHC Dodge Neon and it has the 3.55 final drive (taller) gear:

2GNT.com - nv-t350_and_variants_information

This is usually the transmission everyone switches to when they start making more power. Everything should be compatible with your car except for the bellhousing... you'll have to use your current one.

So do I have to swap the bell housing or not? If the final drive gear is taller I am not going to order it. my nt is slow as it is, I don't want it slower. I just want a transmission that will bolt directly up and has either the same or a shorter final drive gear. I don't know what to do.

If the transmission is from an older Neon, and this one is, it has a cable clutch. You need to swap the bellhousing for your current one, which has a hydraulic clutch.

The transmission does indeed have taller gears, though, so it doesn't sound like it's right for you anyway.

That doesn't sound right. We pulled the NVT-350 right off a Neon and bolted it right into a GS.

The bellhousing incompatibility is even listed in the link Paul posted earlier.

...

It will work. We have one in a 98 GS, supposedly it's a better transmission.

from a tranny noob(in both aspects of the word), why is it supposedly better. you said the gears are taller, so by that to do mean the rev out longer (aka if i am redlining at 35mph, i will now redline at 40mph? as an example) I've been toying with a new transmission when i get an LSD and i guess i figure i might as well start learning now.

"Supposedly"

Ask the guys who get them, I'll ask my buddy why he thought so enough to get one.

As far as what the link says or doesn't say, why would I care, I have first hand experience, so unless my buddy swapped housings when I wasn't looking...

It's not really a big deal... he either swapped the housings or the tranny is from a later model car. We're not calling you a liar or anything.

You hit the nail on the head. It provides for lower RPM's at higher speeds.

For example, your RPM's might be in the 2K range instead of the 3K range while driving on the highway. It should also allow for a higher top speed, though the car won't reach that speed as quickly.

It's probably a good thing for drag cars and high power street cars. You would probably want to stick with the 3.94 tranny for everything else.

Not saying anyone is, just saying why would I bother reading that post when I have witnessed this firsthand. I don't know if the transmission has anything to do it with but my buddy's GS was able to hang with my GST set to 15 lbs on a 14b all the way through mid-3rd. We both had decent launches and I had minimal hop.

Thanks Velocita and Locke cleared a lot of things up. Guess the only thing to decide now is how much HP the NT will need to make before it can benefit from this swap.
