This shift lever doesn't look right. I can't get any of the aftermarket shift knobs to Bolt down hard enough to stay sturdy on the end of the lever.

Someone cut it short and grinded it down.
I had the same thing with my old 97 GST. Just find an aftermarket knob with some set screws. You may need to grind the shifter smaller to get the knob to fit snug. Then just tighten the crap out of the set screws. Had the same thing on my car for years and worked great.

On a side note,,,I would never use knobs with set screws
if any spirited driving was planned.
I had that type once,,never again,,,what happened
was the set screws came loose,,,and as I was trying get
on it,and bang second gear,,the knob came off and I missed
a shift. I over revved the motor, and a mile down the road
it started to knock. It was done.
So I reccomend a screw on knob,,there are plenty of nice ones.
Although looks like you'll be lookin for a shifter. Ideal time to get
a short throw shifter.

You could always go to the junkyard and swap it out for another 2g shifter and not mess around with aftermarket set screw types. Usually anything with a set screw is junk, the ones that take the time to make a real product for a specific vehicle are worth the money because they fit like stock.

Just cut it lower so you get the fater part of the lever then get a good knob and shove it on. I have mine cut pretty low and got a pretty nice oem style knob that's all metal. I just place it on top and with a rag and hammer pounded it on. I've had it that way for about 12-14 years with absolutely no problems. I also think that it shifts so much smoother with the lever shorter but I also have a custom done short throw underneath.

Hit a junk yard and pull a new shift mech section. It's a few bolts and cables and worth it. Any other "solution" seems temporary or will wear out. Not knocking anyone on the thread, but just change it to a junk yard one and you'll have no worries about screws coming loose, gorilla glue cracking or melting, etc....
