ok i jus put in a nt 63 in my eclipse i used some parts from the old engine like the crank pulley becuz the one was cracked on the edge...i replaced the timing belt did everything like i was suppose to...and when i was doing the base timing i couldnt see the timing marks on the pulley so i shined the light from the bottom of the car and the marks are way retarded like out of adjustment so i tried to adjust it and its jus way to far out of adjustment...so i rechecked my timing marks all of them line up.... so i have no idea what could be makin it do that unless of course the pulley i have is different from the one that came with the engine...please someone help have no idea really whats up with the car

I doubt it is your problem but if you used a crank pulley from an Evo the timing mark will be 180 deg from a DSM crank pulley.

its off another 6 bolt i had... but they both look exactly the same i dont understand what the problem is... why it would b way retarded like that.....i have no idea...it doesnt run like crap or anything
you think the comp could b retarding it like that?

What you think is the timing mark, must not be the timing mark. The timing marks you should be looking at are the ones on the oil pump. If those line up while at TDC, and the cam gears line up, you CANT be wrong on the crank pulley. Take the crank pulley off and see if you can see that timing mark on the crank gear.

Ive been fooled by "timing marks" when checking base timing before. Locate the actual mark and mark it with something white like chalk. Clean it up with some sand paper and make it look more prominent.

i checked that 2 and its lined up..they all line up...the oil pump sprocket arrows are both lined up....i think it mite b the pulley or for some reason the comp is retarding it..i have no idea

Or its so far off you dont see the mark. If it was 5* BTDC before you did the work, doesnt mean its going to be after. And if you dont ground the ECU, you probably wont see the mark at all. It jumps around all over the damn place. Move the CAS around after grounding the ECU and take another look.

Check to make sure the rubber in the harmonic dampener hasn't separated.

Also this just came to mind. Checking the easy mistakes, you have the timing light hooked to the number one wire right?

I also second the notion of checking the rubber in the dampener as it is very common for it to separate and let the outside spin freely of the center.

on your fire wall youll find a small brown plastic plug-in sensor lookin thing. un plug the cap and look inside. the cap is just like a dead end weather protector deal. when you look at the peice thats connected to your wire harness you'll see a single metal prong sticking up in there. its pretty small. when you check and mess with timing and play with the cam sensor this little prong in there has to be grounded. use a lil aligator clip with like 14 gauge wire criped to it. ground the end of the wire on the - batt. post. then reach the paper clip (aka roach clip) into the sensor you took the cap off of. crimp down on that lil metal prong sticking up. this adds 5 degrees. set timing a lil further than normal and pull the ground clip off. you should see the timing marks fall back about 5 degrees. dont beleive me? look in your chiltons book. it explains it step by step. this grounded sensor is sopposed to help sinc the ecu with the actual ignition timing. and yes double check that the actuall physical timing is for surely correct. when timing marks are perfect the dowel pins on the cams will be straight up. all 4 marks on the cams can have a straight edge laid across and they'd be perfect. and of course the crank mark should be dead on.

k thanks everyone ill do it and let u guys kno

yea it was on num 1 thanks im sure its because i didnt ground the comp now that i think of it i didnt have an ali clip so i jus wraped a wire around it im sure thats ### it is since u guys brought that up:thumb: thanks

wrapping a wire around it wont work. I mean it might, but theres a good chance you'll miss. If you look closely at that connector, there are 3 "pins" in there. The middle one is plastic, the two small outside ones are the leads that you need to ground, at least one of them. Go get some alligator clips to ensure that you dont miss it. Its easy to miss if you dont look at it closely.

When you ground the ecu, the idle will even out and you will notice a change in the sound of the engine. Thats the ignition timing being fixed and it stops jump around.
