Well I tried searching for how to tell if the master or slave cylinder was bad but couldn't find anything. Heres the deal. I've had a bad 2nd gr synchro however now that summer hit and it got hot, my tranny poops on me. When the car gets hot, all 6 of my gears grind. 1st and 2nd the most. Also when they start grinding, its really hard to get into any of them....3,4,and 5 I have to literally jam it in. My dad says its the clutch. I say that the synchros are all going bad and others have told me its the master/slave cylinder. Would either of those 2 make this kind of thing happen? Here are my options...buy a used tranny that is said to be in good condition and swap them out, put a new clutch in(just put one in last january), or put in new master/slave cylinders? Any help is appreciated....thanks a lot.

When is the last time you adjusted your clutch? This could be caused by poor pedal adjustment, meaning that even when the pedal is pushed to the floor it isn't compressing the fluid in the clutch master cylinder enough to disengage the clutch. This would explain the grinding into gears. What I would do is check out your adjustment first, if you adjust the clutch a bit and you still have the same problem then I would look along the inside of the firewall to see if your clutch master cylinder is leaking. If it is leaking there will more than likely be fluid dripping down the push rod or you will notice the fluid under the carpet. You could also have air in the lines, what this will do is the air will compress more then the fluid and will result in poor disengagement, this would also explain the gear grinding. Next I would start replacing stuff, replace your slave first because it is the cheaper of the two. You can rebuild the clutch master cylinder for around $24 for a 1g. The rebuild should be simple and striaght forward and can save you $60 more then buying an already rebuilt one. The rebuild kit can be found at www.napaonline.com or probably at any automotive parts supplier.
