Is this 7bolt block is still usable ?

Ok i have 7bolt block that has a chip missing from the head gasket area where the driver side motor mount goes.. heres the deal i was going to change the head when i found that chip missing from the block i looks like someone welded before i saw too much oil on the front case i dont like it, but i have a change to get a 6bolt engine for 150 with 131k on her... Should i go for the 6bolt block or that 7bolt block and see how it goes..

I was thinking the same thing take it to a machine shop and have check well the thing i notice is that there was alot oil on the front case and timing belt area so i don't know if it was leaking or not.. the old head gadket look blown may be was leaking beacuse it was bad. But i also dont want to ruin my kvlar timing belt
 
Thanks for the good advise delta448 im going to take the block to the machine shop and have them inspect to see if theres any cracks and right now this block is not on the car i already did my reading on doingbthe 6bolt swap but i would like to use my7bolt frontcase and mod like road race did it because i dont have enought funds to go dsmlink and have all the wiring soldier for the 1g cast

The smaller hole towards the bottom of the picture is an oil feed to the head,

Delta448, this is incorrect. The head oil feed comes from the block thu the last head bolt hole on the exhaust side. Caddy corner from where this pic was taken.

From what I can tell, the cection we are looking at is the front intake side of the engine (OP correct me if I am wrong here)

Starting from the top of OP's poc, post #1
The top hole with the oval gasket ring is an oil drain back hole, no oil pressure there, just a gravity drop back to the oil pan.

The round hole with the blue gasket imprint is a head bolt hole, no fluids here

The small round hole is a water passage, the most pressure seen here will be that of what your rad cap holds 13-16psi

I doubt the head gasket was blown in that area, it looks like it sealed well there.

Delta448, I will agree with this statement tho.

From the look and placement of the missing chip, I would say it was a casting flaw from the factory.
But to be on the safe side I would still have it checked out, I doubt any welding will be needed, and welding may cause more issues than fix.
If the block is weled/brazed here, the heat may "pull down " the machined surfaces, the head deck could be corrected by having the block milled, but how much?
The 4G63 has a close Piston to deck clearance, around .005 from what I can recall
Now on the front of the block that chip is close to the water pump mounting, so the "pull down" from welding could cause issues here also.

Having that area checked for cracks willl be fine, dye penatrant or magnaflux, for piece of mind.

So, If you did not have water leaking from where the chip is missing, I would just leave it be.

For the oily front, I would say that is a diffrent issie alltogether, I would recomend checking your cam, crank, oil pump and BS seals.
 
I was mistaken, Bogus is correct, that hole is indeed a coolant passage.

I did know that the head's oil feed is on the opposite corner, so I'm really lost as to what was going through my head. I honestly am not sure what I was thinking. Maybe I was distracted or something, but still that's something I definitely should've not mixed up. Wow. I apologize for that danielbo91.
 
Yes bogusSvo you correct about the little hole is for colant when i took the old bolts off they where pretty strech out and they had coolant mix with oil also when i bought the engine it was smoking white thats why i sad the head gasket was bad, ill have to check for bs seals since this block has 154k miles they could be bad
