I am going to have to let my dad drive my car about 60 miles and I do not want it making boost. He understands the concept of how the car works, and the load dependent boost, however I know for a fact that he will not be watching the vac/boost and will probably be making at least a couple psi the whole way without knowing it.

I know that I could just pull the cotter pin and the arm off the wastegate actuator but I'd rather not... when I swapped this turbo on, the cotter pin had galled in the whole and I had to drill it out, it was a huge pain in the ass to get it on. Is there any other way to make the car boostless???? Can I just crank down the mbc? Or maybe pull on of the vac. lines or something like that??

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

dont drive it! mine did the same thing a couple weeks ago, it whined and made a belt sounding squeal under boost. the nut holding the compressor wheel on came off! luckily it did no damage to the motor, just a lot of oil in the IC.

It hasnt been doing the squeeky sound today. Anything I can do to prevent it from goin out? I mean... I dont have the money for a new turbo, much less for motor repairs... Any suggestions?

My car just recently began making a very squeeky annoying sound when it reaches around 7psi. In another thread, someone said that it was probably that my turbo was dying. Honestly, I cannot afford another turbo right now, much less an engine repair, so I was wondering if there was a way to just STOP my car from getting boost, that way eliminating the noise, and avoiding serius turbo problems. I dont want to COMPLETELY remove the turbo, just stop it from getting boost. Any ideas? I need this ASAP. Thanks in advance... Hope someone can help.

My other thread:
Squeeky Turbo

Note: Its a 1991 Eclipse GS-T, A/T. 13g turbo.

You can disconnect the wastegate flapper from the actuator arm which will keep boost from building.

Have you checked the turbo for shaft play? Is the exhaust smoking?

Just stay out of boost and at low rpm. The noise you are hearing is from the turbine wheel scraping the turbo housing. You can find a used turbo for cheap in the classifieds. Or you could rebuild the one you have. I have a 13g that has 73k on it but the turbine wheel is ruined. Needle bearings got into the intake and chewed up the intake wheel. It chewed the turbo back so far the turbine wheel wont scrap the housing no matter how much shaft play it has. Check you turbo for in and out and side to side shaft play.

Are you just going to drive it like this daily. Your gas mileage is going to be horrible.

you can just remove the wastegate arm. its just held by a cotter pin.

I agree its best just to stay out of boost. That thing will run like crap if you just disconnect the wastegate arm.

You could take the wastegate arm off but I wouldnt because you car would be slower than naturally aspirated. Just coast those hills.

I would just recommend you just get another turbo. Upgrade to a 14b or 16g. You could probably get a 14b for about 100 or less. Look around on classifieds and eBay.

That. Or you could just not push the gas pedal down a certain amount.

BTW, the turbo is always going to spin. So it is just going to keep getting worse.

The exhaust is not smoking. yes, its my daily drive. I know the turbine will continue to spin, but I just want it to not make noise, or charge boost. That way minimize the damage at least until I can replace it. Can you point me to a more detailed tutorial, or explanation of removing the wastegate flapper?

Yeah. Its what I've been doing. But when I have to go up a hill, it gets kinda annoying... Just wanted to know if there was anything else I could do. Since aparently there isnt, well I'll just control my "right foot" :)

Well mine did this also but the turbo (16g) wasnt going out the manifold had a monster crack in it. check that first.

this happened to me a while back, I figured it out by messing with my bov. The allen wrench screws on the outside holding the top cover to the metal part of the bov was loose. I tightened them, and there was no noise. I thought my turbo was done too, but it was just a boost leak. I have a greddy knock off rs. Try looking at the bov and see if you can tighten anything down.

I will do a search around for the 14b. But wouldnt I have to upgrade injectors as well? to 450s?

depends.

run more boost, requires more injector.

run less boost, requires less injector.

Run crazy big turbo with crazy low boost - silly inefficient, but still, small injectors.

my stock 2g injectors handle my 20g a-ok. I just run lower boost because I got the turbo on the cheap.

but larger turbos run more air at same boost levels due to size. fluid dynamics makes head hurts. run even less boost in such a case. it's not all in how much boost you run.
