is there a way to disable the lockup function on the torque converter?

I know I'm posting in the wrong forum but I'm not getting much replies in the 420a drivetrain forum.

Is there a way to stop my converter from locking up? is there a plug or anything on the trans that I can unplug?

my problem is that when I shift my car into gear (drive or reverse) the converter locks up and the car stalls out.

I can get the car into drive if I rev to around 4k rpm, then shift to drive, then when I come to a stop, the car will stall.

Kinda odd that any tranny locks up where I would say that you got more motor problems (tuning issues) when it comes to power (since that is a Chrysler tranny). Granted, an automatic hooked up to a 4 cylinder isn't the best since the tranny takes quite out of the motor-why the idle RPM's in P or N have to be higher until the thing goes into D and it shouldn't stall out as you mentioned along with winding it up clear to 4KRPM's to even begin the drive.

Usually the lock function doesn't kick in until it hits the 4th gear.

The system could be in a "Limp Mode" - meaning that the tranny has issues ...

Good luck-DSM

I've checked for Vaccum leaks, found one, fixed it. Didn't fix the problem.
I've cleaned the throttle body, egr, and IAC. no change
I've changed the TPS and the ECU. No change.
I've replaced the plugs, wires, and coil. No change.
I'm getting a trouble code for a failed lock up converter, So i'm pretty sure that is my problem. I can't afford to get a new one, nor do I have the time to drop the tranny, so This is why I asked if there's a way to disable the lockup, like if there is a plug on the transmission or something that i could unplug to disable the lockup function so I can rule this out.

Thank you.

the thing that's making me think the converter is locked up is that it's just like popping the clutch on a manual, I can rev the motor and then shift, to keep it alive, but once I come to a stop, the car will die. If I can manage to get it to drive, it shifts through all gears smoothly and on time, so it's not in limp, because then it would be stuck in 2nd gear. Also, right before it started stalling out all the time when I put it in gear, I could hear the some odd sounds coming from the transmission, kind of like if you were crumbling up a coke can, and it made this sound right before the car stops, and then it would stall.

and I'm getting a failed lockup torque converter code

the transmission is out of a 95, and the car is a 99 so could the tcu be rejecting the tranny? even though it was running fine before

? .. what about in neutral, does it die or can you keep an idle? -- why I was pointing to the motor..

Side question: did you do a recent fluid changeout and what kind of fluid did you use if you did do the changeout?

Good luck and sorry of the problems - aint no fun to have. DSM

Haha, still wouldn't trade my dsm for anything. ;D

the transmission was making an odd whirring sound, almost sounded like a turbo spooling, but really loud, so I changed the fluid and filter and it fixed that, this was about a month ago.

I don't remember what fluid I used though, but it is the same fluid that I've always used.

I think it's the only fluid at autozone that is for my car. haha,

oh and yeah, it is fine in neutral also.

I'm going to pull the tcu for the same year tranny today also, just to make sure.

sounds like your tranny is at the end of its life! and my be the Solenoid pack is bad or going out. was there any shaving or anything in the pan when u change the filter? did u do a flush on the trans? dose it shift hard Or dose it take a long time to shift?

I went thou two trans on my car! the A604 trans isn't worth crap!
i would swap it if u can for a NVG-350
