Is the Quaife safe in a vice?

I don't feel safe squeezing a $900 part like this. Any suggestions on a better way to tighten these bolts?

GET SOFTJAWS.

Why can't you start all of them by hand and then use an impact, then place in vise with SOFTJAWS and then use torque wrench to 91ft/lbs.

agree soft jaws, ive seen guys use other things like put pool toys around the vice grips

Of course you don't, you only have a flimsy piece of cardboard between the jaws of the vice and the differential. You definitely need some additional padding/cushioning there.

Thanks, just looked up "soft jaws". Wasn't aware of this add-on to a vice. Anyone seen anything with a more circular grip? I'm thinking regardless of the softness of the gripping surface, the grip strength against such a tiny surface area to support the LSD under 100 lbs of torque will be too much for the wall.

Then please at least use a quality 1/2" impact with short 19mm socket at 120+psi and loctite blue or red. Even hand installation of all bolts first to hand-tight, then seat the rig gear, then torque two in star pattern or 180* from each other, confirm seated ring gear and torque the rest in even star pattern.

Thanks. I plan on doing so, just like that but first I have to secure it. How possible is it to bend the LSD? I'm not feeling so comfortable squeezing this thing even if I wrap it in fat rubber bands

I've got done spare wood. Perhaps I can rig something. 2 half circles to provide more surface area contact I'm thinking. Gotta study up on some carpentry...

If you use wood, which actually isnt a bad idea, use a softer material like pine. Id probably even go as far as finding some rubber strips to secure to the wood... like a cut up coupler from an intercooler or something similar

It's steel, not glass, this isn't rocket science. The casing isn't going to move all over the place unless you start cranking the crap out of the vise, but again like I previously mentioned, you can torque it with a 1/2" impact in one hand and barehand the assembly in the other and get the job done.

Rocket science or Legos, I just bought this $900 toy, and this 1st vice here of mine and all my info/experience is 2nd hand through you guys, so I won't be taking any chances this time. I can't count how many things I've broken on my first attempt not knowing strength limits of materials or force required to crank or smash something new, but aside from my cylinder head I ruin on a botched 1st timing belt job all due to a few degrees if viewing angle I used to visually measure the alignment of the cam gears, most effups haven't been that costly. So I'm going the wood route.

Twicks, are you referring to some kind of torque controlling function of an air gun, because I should point out I didn't know that existed if it does, nor do I have an air gun. Thanks for your help though.

There are some torque limiting devices out there that will work on air guns but I think Tim is saying to tighten it down with the impact and then use a torque ratchet to apply 91 ftlbs to the bolts. And yes, cut some pine pieces for your vice. You can even cut some rubber pieces from the side wall of passenger car tires too.

passenger car? Huh? And Tim was saying use my hands and an impact then torque appropriately? I think I got that part -at least up to about 60 ft/lbs before the LSD moves

How in the heck is this so difficult to do?? This is literally a 2 minute job.

Large vise, soft jaws, 1/2" impact with 19mm short socket, 1/2" torque wrench with short 19mm socket, loctite red or blue. Torque to spec in star pattern.
