First gear is grinding badly. When driving everything seems to shift fine and ive had no problems. Its just that when i come to a stop light or when im not moving, most of the time when i put it in first gear it grinds even if i have the clutch fully pressed to the floor. Before i got a new clutch (oem) a couple months ago, first gear was like the easiest gear for me and it never grind. I tried going from 2nd to first and it still grinds sometimes & occasionally trying to put it in second gear & it grinds. Could it be the slave or master cylinder that i need replaced or should i say bye bye to my Tranny??

i also have a 98 GST and my first gear is rather iffy it sometimes wont go into gear without a bit of force or grinding and also it sometimes pops out seems that it is a common problem with 98s or something also im not sure if my clutch is factory, replaced or aftermarket

I had the same thing happen to my car. My clutch pedal engagement was right in the middle of the travel area. It ended up being my shift fork and synchros were pretty much toast. My clutch also started slipping extremely badly, so I went ahead and had them install a ACT clutch and flywheel while they were at it.

Don't be to upset or suprised if it is the tranny, but I wish you all the best!

sounds like a bad synchronizer (transmission issue) if it was a clutch cylinder it would do it to all the gears you shift in.. u can get your synchronizer replaced for about $150-200 or so depending on the mechanic

$150-$200 if you drop the tranny yourself. Check your fluids, my clutch fluid would get low and make it hard for me to get it in 1st. When i ripped my tranny out of my 98GST to put my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate in i took it to a local shop and had them rip it open to make sure everything was ok. They told me the 2nd gear was torn up, and i called Shep and sent it to him for a standard FWD rebuild. The local shop wanted $1200 just to replace the gear. Shep replaced second and everything else but the other 4 gears for around the same price after shipping. Also, he had my tranny back in less than a week. Great guy, very skilled, and takes care of business. Shep also told me our trannys our known for bad second gears. You may want to consider having it replaced while the tranny is out. Good Luck. :dsm:
