2G Is my engine toast? What is this noise?

Dropped a friend at work and this happened suddenly. Sounds like it's in the valvetrain... has oil and coolant, grinding noise under boost

Car starts and runs fine, makes an intermittent rough scraping sound at idle and while driving every 3 seconds. Like sheet metal scraping quickly- like shhhhhtt

Barely boosts but boost gauge functions normally, grinding under acceleration badly. Otherwise rpms and starting up arr normal


I did just change all accessory drive belts, timing done 5k miles ago...

I think we're going to need more than that, especially under different conditions
idle, light rev, heavier rev (but not crazy), possibly slow speed drive.

Referring to the grinding and intermittent loud shhhttt noise (at the beginning of starting and at the end.)

Inspect starter and flywheel.

You just changed belts...make sure your harmonic balancer isn't coming apart. Same for ac idle pulley. That sounds external. Not the motor but something outside of it.

Where's the general vicinity of the noise? i.e. bell housing, timing belt, etc.

If I had to guess, I'd say the clutch/flywheel.

Sounds like it's coming from the exhaust manifold / turbo area... I'm gonna pull out the intake after work and check for shaft play

Update! Took off the intake. Turbo has major major shaft play, turbine is loose. Hopefully bits of metal didn't go into the engine. Will drain the oil and see.

Crankcase and intake aren't connected. That won't tell you anything. If metal bits went anywhere check your intercooler. If they got into the motor they likely aren't there anymore. Without a borescope you may never know.
