Is it ok to use this craked transmission?

I just picked up this 1gb auto for really cheap. The engine was removed due to overheating it. I just looked at the auto transmission and it is cracked. (see picture below.

It it safe to use the transmission as is or is a weld or quick fix recommended?

Thanks in advance for any input.

After pulling the trans you could have it welded depending how bad it looks on the inside. But that is a huge crack and it could extend into the case. So really have plans to find another transmission.

I have a spare trans that is going to have a full rebuild this winter but was hoping I could get by just for the winter (snow, ice, etc..)

I would not use it if you plan on driving the car. The crack will get worse and it will put more stress on the housing bolts. You don't want to start breaking them. Just clean it up and have someone weld it. I have had it done before. Its cheep and worth it.

If it was me i wouldnt use it BUT if i HAD do here is what i would do.. Drill a hole at the end of the crack that way it stops it from spreading farther out. Grind a groove along the crack on both sides then weld it. That should surely work.

What kind of metal is the transmission? This way I can find someone that welds that kind of metal to do it. Thanks.

If you are set on welding it and want it to last a while, you'll need to disassemble the tranny and clean the bell housing really well, and put it through several heat cycles to bake out all the oil and grime before welding. It wouldn't hurt to find someone that is familiar with TIG welding cast aluminum, as it can take on a life of it's own sometimes.

Thanks for the tips, much appreciated.

Obviously he isn't trying to save the trans, which I don't blame in from the looks of that crack in the housing. Hopefully there are no harmful adverse effects if the trans does fail before he installs the other one. If it were me, I would look for a new housing piece then put that on it for a cheap alternative fix.
