Is it hard tuning?

I have dsmlink, and I'm new to the whole tuning thing. My buddy threw a base tune on there but I don't think its good considering I get this boost cut around 4k rpm. Its weird, it'll start building boost then start to stutter and starts having a hard time being in boost. I'm wondering if the tune has anything to do with it? My AFR'S are off in boost? Idk. I was wondering if I would be able to set something up myself instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a good base tune. Or if there's anyone on here who sells base tunes or any type of tunes, if there is I would love to know.

I have a 7 bolt with 8:5:1 pistons
stock injectors
16g turbo
2.5 O2 housing - 3 inch exhaust
evo 3 intake manifold
bov is not recirculated
idk what else to list to help out but I need some help

Forgot to mention, I don't have a boost guage or wideband yet. Just ordered my boost guage yesterday and still need my wideband
I just got my car back from the shop 2 days ago after it not running for a couple months so I barely have anything

I was going to use my laptop to read everything. But I haven't logged anything yet I was just wondering if I could do any type of tune myself without messing up my car or if there's anyone that sells tunes

Thanks

Read on the ECM-link forums. They have a lot of information on there. Start off by reading what all of the settings mean so you have some idea of what you are even adjusting. Then start looking at how to tune write ups. From everything I have heard from people tuning is extremely easy with link once you get it figured out.

I would definitely recirculate the BOV until you tune to compensate for that. Have you logged injector duty cycle? you could be pushing them too hard

Okay, I need to get a new intake then. And no haven't logged anything yet, dsmlink and everything Is still new to me

Does the stutter feel like your holding onto a machine gun?

Well I never held onto a machine gun but yeah sorta like that. Not tremedesly crazy

Id check your spark plug gap, When i bought my car i had the machine gun like stutter under boost(spark blowout)

I pulled my spark plugs and they were champion? brand at like .038-.040, previous owner must have just dropped them in without knowing anything.

get ngk coppers bpr6es (maybe bpr7es because of your mods) and gap them and .028, it fixed my problem, and the plugs are only like $10 bucks a set at parts store.:hellyeah:

Sweet! Thanks man ill give that a try

Every DSM I've ever seen with a 16G on stock fuel system has fuel cut around 4k rpm's.....even 1g's with 2g MAF's.

Really? You think I should upgrade my system then? I'm running a walboro 255 pump that's about it

Champions.. junk. I had never heard of them until about a week ago when I did the spark plugs in an 01 Lumina. That's the only time I have ever broken a spark plug in half.. and it happened to all 6!

Like everybody else said, the Link forums guys can help you the most. The wideband and boost gauge are going to help you understand what is going on.

If you have a walbro 255 on stock fpr you are going to want to get an afpr or just downgrade to a 190.

And as stated above, change your spark plugs to NGK BPR6ES. :hellyeah:

Well I plan on going bigger turbo and more performance so ill probably keep the 255 and just upgrade my fpr

SOME 2gs are able to get away with running a 255 with out a FPR upgrade. However I wouldn't run the risk of using it that way.

So if someone tells you you'll be fine think of the odds when it's very few 2gs that run properly with out the FPR. I'm not totally sure what is different about their cars that it runs so well when everyone else has it run like shit.:|

Yeah I rather not take the risk =\

I'm still curious though if there's any pre set tunes that I could buy, or any adjustments that someone might have for my set up that would make my car run good

You shouldn't be doing anything without a boost gauge and wideband. Link is very user friendly, if your willing to put in the time and read, then you can do everything yourself. From what it seems like, you haven't done any of that.

There are some general how-to videos on the ecmlink website that will show you how to do some preliminary setup.

Once you read and figure out how to log, we can help you more. Till then, stay out of boost.

I have tuned a few 2g's without FPR's on 255's and they seemed fine to me. I would still put one on tho to have the adjustability.

You definitely need a wideband, boost gauge, and fuel injectors with your currend list of mods. Every car I tune, I make the owner wire in the wideband to the ecu or else I'm not tuning it. Its so easy to do and it only takes 5-10 minutes.

You'll never be able to buy a tune and have it work. Every car is so different is so many different ways...even if the mods are similar. The best I can do is have you email me some logs and I can make some suggestions. I look at people's logs all day at work and I make notes on them and email it back.

Do you have a FMIC on your car? A good efficient intercooler really helps with making power at higher boost levels.

Sorry for the late response I just saw your post now, but I gotcha with what you're saying and that's awesome that you do that. What kind of fuel injectors you think I should get? Evo 550's fit right in right? They good? And yeah I have a FMIC

Evo injectors are an improvement if you're on a budget. Im pretty sure they fit right in. I personally don't have any experience with them, tho.

I wouldn't change anything unless I had wideband. I coulda swore I just saw an advert for one for under $200. Keep the boost down until you have the wideband. I wouldn't run alternative maps until you have a wideband. I wouldn't modify my timing or Mfcomp or fuel or anything until I had a wideband. And and a boost gauge. It's like you're flying on instruments with no instruments...

What you need before you do anything else:

Boost gauge
Wideband (Innovative LC-1 is $200 with a gauge and works well with Link)
AFPR
Injectors (get something around the 750cc mark, it won't take much to run out 550s)
