So I was wondering if it is bad for the engine to go as low as 600 RPM when I engage the clutch. I have heard it's not good for the engine. Is that true? If so how bad is it? What does it do to the engine?

Yes, it's bad...don't do it. Bogging/lugging the engine puts a large load on the motor which usually results in the car knocking.

+1

I've done some logs and being in a gear too high for conditions I'll see knock depending on how much throttle is present.

OP
You are saying you engage the clutch at 600rpm? Is that while you are shifting you'll let the RPM die down that low or you will be driving and let the car get down the 600 RPM?

IMO 1st gear would be fine at 600RPM (load wise) but you really shouldn't drive under your idle speed.

no hes probably talking about slowly slipping the clutch during idle enough to get him moving before he starts on the throttle.

in 1st at a stop your going to have to tap on the gas a little before you slip the clutch. Do you not know how to drive a manual trans? Just asking thats all.

Others have said it but I will throw in my two cents. 600 RPM in first? NP. 600 RPM elsewhere? WHY? It won't help on fuel mileage. I can't say for sure it would hurt the engine, but knock is never a good thing. If it knocks, gear down. I still can't understand why you would be at 600 RPM in any other gear other then first though...

It's when I'm in traffic and get tired of shifting from neutral to first. I wanted to clarify my thinking here because I figured it would be better for the clutch to go low than ease it in at 2k. That's sort of the point to my question. I could shift and keep the RPM between 900 and 1,300 but when I'm doing a lot of shifting from neutral to 1st that's not going to happen. I don't feel like putting the effort in. But if it's bad for the engine I suppose I will try a little harder. I don't like accelerating below 2,000 RPM in any gear except first. I don't hear a knock but the car has no response below 2k in 2nd through 5th. I just figured that's how the car has always been (other manuals I have driven don't have such a severe issue) but maybe it's cause it's been bogged down too much..

Please don't hate and tell me to get an automatic. I think we all know that traffic can get to be a pain in the ass with a stick. On highway 1 (CA) it can be stop & go every 5 seconds for a half hour strait..

Its fine. I have no gassed it from my apartment to the gas station several times. What I mean is, let the clutch out slowly enough to get moving, the engine will pickup to about 1.700 or so rpm then shift. It will buck pretty hard at around 1,800 rpm due to having no open throttle. My roomate's 300z will get to around 55 mph doing that. Of course it is N/A and pushing around 400 horsepower it will get away from you doing the no gas peddle thing. You just have to let the engine pickup speed and not jam the throttle wide open that low.

Just to let you know, you don't hear knock unless you have an audible detonation which you won't get from doing what you are doing.

In stop and go traffic I'll let my car get to a low rpm and push itself along sometimes.

Yeah thats what I do often Liquidx it does not seem to have any detrimental effects however, if you try and punch the throttle to WOT when the engine is just pulling it self it can and will cause problems.
