Intro (newbie) ME

Hey everyone, I'm jake, i'm live in vermont. im in the process of buying a 1gen talon. It has 130,000 on it. It's a TSi AWD. White, the exterior is perfect no rust nothing. I'm pretty suprised for a vermont car. The head/valves/timing/water pump have been replaced not too long ago cause the timing belt went. The trubo has no play and work perfectly. Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I'm sure i'll be up in here asking alot of questions cause i've never own a turbo car. I'm in the process of celling my honda accord and i think the talon is a good jump for me. See ya guys around. Ill post up some pics once i own the car. should be less than a week

Welcome to Tuners (and DSMs in general)! This is by far the best DSM site on the 'net, so you've come to the right place. Sounds like an awesome ride, be sure to post pics! I'm sure you'll like it a lot more then that honda, well till stuff breaks. But that's what we're here for!

P.S. Change that timing belt every 60K miles, along with the balance shaft belt. If the balance shaft belt breaks, it's taking the timing belt out with it, and you'll need head work again. Probably one of those things you're gonna wanna learn to do yourself since it has to be done more often then a honda or most other cars.

okay so i stopped by the car yesterday to look at it in more detail...the owner wasn't there but i was able to look at the body more carefully. I'm kinda concerned, my dad and brother also looked at it and said that the undercarage crazy rust on it. i dont think it's crazy amounts of rust but the frame is rusting. Should i be concerned? i havn't looked at the engine but my brother was able to start it up and said the engine starts up fine.

Its hard to say about the underside. It depends on where the rust is. Most likley by the front and read bumper covers its really rusty. Its quite possible to have one with no rust, I live in wisconsin and the 90 I got had very little rust on the paint and you can tell it was not taken good care of. The underside is a different story but its not easy to avoid that.

As for the health of the car ask to do a quick compression test. Tester is like $30 if you don't have one.

Max ~14 PSI difference all between cylinders

Standard Compression: 164
Service Limit: 120

I think most consider 150+ good with 5-10 difference between cylinders

if you live in Vermont of course there is going to be alot of rust. I use to live in NJ and in the winter all the salt they throwdown on the streets just eats its way through the frame. Rust is a common thing just make sure it didnt eats its way through the frame

on the way to school today i traveled with a guy in a 2gen talon...we kept teasing each other then finally i wanted to see how fast he really was....WHOA did he take off...nice looking car too, white with silver rims lowered, stock exhaust but damn those are fast...cant wait, i'll know for sure on tuesday if the guy will buy my car

i dont actually have the talon yet...my dad is getting on my case about selling my honda before i buy the talon. so hopfully tuesday he'll buy it then i can buy the talon....
