intermediate shaft Q:

Is there a difference in the 1ga AWD and FWD intermediate shafts? I have to replace mine and no local stores carry the intermediate shaft. So I went to a junkyard they had a 1ga turbo there. I forgot to look if it was AWD or FWD, and just paid for them to pull the shaft... Did I just pay for a big paper weight?

They are different. Also the 1990/early 1991 awd intermediate is different than the 1991 1/2 up shaft.

The FWD and AWD shafts are different.

Here are the part numbers for the AWD Intermediate shaft:

Intermediate Shaft (1990-1991.5) -- MD740193 -- $220.04
Intermediate Shaft (1991.5-1999) -- MD748830 -- $202.15

If you cannot get it at a dealer, then go to Cherry Hill Triplex - PARTS - Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Mitsubishi, Kia, Suzuki -- (Parts Catalog)


The FWD Turbo 5-speed intermediate shaft part numbers are:

Intermediate Shaft -- Single synchro 2nd gear (Late 1988-1992.6) -- MD729545
Intermediate Shaft -- Double Synchro 2nd gear (1992.6-1994) -- MD738867
Intermediate Shaft -- Double Synchro 2nd gear (1995-1999) -- MD743220

Anyone know if you can re-pack the carrier bearing for the intermediate shaft?

Ripper are you talking about drive shafts, or the I-shaft in the trans?

I-shaft in the trans?

The inner shaft on a AWD front drivers side.

Same on all 1G awd, fwd does not come with a half shaft. So I guess the answer is they are diffrent.

New Question

Anyone know if you can re-pack the carrier bearing for the intermediate shaft?

Reason being that the bearing seems fairly dry. And I am wondering if it is possible for it to have any kind of horrible failure???
