I bought a new driver side half shaft. I removed the old half shaft from the intermediate shaft at the cup but the old shaft cup is still attached to the intermediate shaft carrier bearing. Haynes manual says I need to take it to a shop but I found a thread on here that says you can separate them yourself.

Can anyone walked me through how to separate these? I don't want to start banging on it with a hammer every which way and accidentally damage it.

What's the best way to separate these?

The half shaft / intermediate shaft is sitting on my bench.

Remove the 2 bolts holding the shaft to the block, take it out of the car, put it in a vise, and tap the cup off. It'll come off pretty easily. You can remove it while it's still on the car as well, but it's a little trickier to get in there if you've never done it.

I had to beat it off with a hammer and a pry bar. Took almost an hour to get them apart. Of course this was on a 1g one, but the concept is the same.

Where do you tap with the pry bar?

Do you tap the cup directly? It's on a work bench right now.

You're saying the new axle is the whole assembly, cv and the intermediate shaft? Just take the old intermediate half shaft out and install the whole new axle. Its literally two 14mm bolts.

No the new assembly is just the half shaft. I have to reuse my old intermediate shaft. It's all on a work bench as I just put in the motor and new tranny.
