Ok i opened my hood on my 1g today and i head something whistling i thought it was the abs, but when i put my ear closer the intake was whistling. I have the stock 14b has some in and out shaftplay, and when im just driving not boosting the turbo sounds like its wining up like a super charger. Why is it whistling??? Mods are k/n filter, FMIC, 3in turbo back, manual BC, Evo Gt manifolt 2g o2 housing, head with 1mm oversized valves.
 
Have you looked at the actual turbine wheel? I had the same exact occurence and it turned out that the blades on the turbo were bent and grinding against the housing. Sounds pretty cool, but of course its not correct.
 
Ill check that out tomorrow when i have some light. I mean theres not that much in and out play but there is, but ill check the fins out tomorrow. Any one else have any input?
 
My input's the same. In/out shaft play + whining sounds like your thrust bearing is failing. The whining is most likely the fins on one of the wheels rubbing the housing due to the excessive shaft play.

When my T25 started whining like that, it was about 1 week before the turbo grenaded (shaft broke), and I have a very short commute.

If you're on a budget, rebuilding the turbo now may be cheaper than replacing it after it fails catastrophically.
 
Its not really in my budget but i might as well just find a used 16g or something just to get me by. ill do some more investigating tho.

If the engine is at dead idle the whistle is a vacuum leak check all your gaskets&hoses. A boost leak check should take you right to it.

We did a boost leak test on the car a few days ago and found 2, one from the elbow/coupler going to the fmic and one from the bov flange, nothing else that we could hear.
 
It might whistle under vacuum but under pressure it would be quiet take a spray bottle of soppie water and spray around where you think the noise is coming from and look for bubbles.

3 inch turbo back exhaust and small turbo.. hmm... That to me sounds to be what it is. I've heard clips of people with a similar set up and you can hear the turbo winning very loudly. It sounds very similar to running open o2 housing but muffled much more.

1/16" is a lot of in/out shaft play. None is what you want. Just to be clear, this is pulling the compressor wheel out of the center section (toward the passenger side) or pushing it into the center section (toward the driver side). Small amounts of up/down (toward/away from the road) and side/side (front of car to back of car) are normal on a brand new turbo, but it can't be so much that the wheels (turbine or compressor) touch the housing.
 
Although it sounds like your turbo is dead, my intake does whistle. Only between 2200 & 2400rpm. It must have something to do with the fact that the filter gets smashed every time I shut the hood. :) Damn thing is too big.

Anyway, that doesn't seem to be your problem, but I thought I would throw it out there for later searches.
